HCoL Blog launches

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 | Foundation

The Humanist Community of Leeds now has it’s own blog.

The new blog will cover some of the topics that we cover in meetings so if you miss a meeting you will be able to catch up on the topics that we covered. As the material grows we are also hopeful that it will become a usual resource for other humanists to look to for inspiration.

New essays category

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009 | Life

I’ve added a new category named essays to my blog.

It will house all of my long whiney posts that you probably won’t reach the bottom of but should because that’s where the message is. It will hopefully be sufficently different from the thoughts category in a number of ways.

First off, they should be longer and more involved. I’ve gone back and categorised a lot of old posts into the category but rejected a lot of them simply because they were too short even though they perhaps otherwise fitted the bill.

Secondly they should be relevant to the wider audience. A lot of the posts in the thoughts category are just literally stuff I have thought about or which is relevant to my life but anything categorised into essays should have meaning for at very least a group people who don’t know me personally.

Finally they should be on some kind of important topic or aspect of life. As such many also share the categories of politics and religion, but not all of them do.

If you think there is something I should write about, why not suggest it in a comment.

Foundation blog

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009 | Foundation

For the time being I have decided to host the foundation’s blog within my own personal blog, at least until it merits its own blog. As such this is the first of what will hopefully be many posts about the foundation!

For those who are interested you can also keep up to date with the activities of the foundation on Twitter and become a fan on Facebook.

5 years and still going strong

Balloons

Today is an anniversary. It’s been five years since I made my first blog post. Back in the day it was on Nerd Federation and I’m not even sure if I really knew what blogging was but since then I’ve go on to write over 1,700 posts on my personal blog alone as well as for dozens, maybe even hundreds of other blogs.

It’s interesting to see the generational shift between us and the previous generation. I, and I’m sure people like Will and Kieran feel similarly, love my blog as it is a fantastic opportunity to share our thoughts, opinions and adventures with the world. And besides, who needs privacy anyway ;).

Comment notifications

Sunday, January 11th, 2009 | News

I’ve finally got round to adding email notifications to further comments being posted on my blog entries. So if you comment on one of the entries you can now opt to be notified by email if someone posts a follow-up comment on that same entry.

Illness

Sunday, December 14th, 2008 | Life

My blogging has been very sporadic recently.

Mainly because I’ve either been at work or in bed and so haven’t really had chance to blog or had anything to blog about. I’m gradually getting back on my feet now though so hopefully by tomorrow I should be feeling fine again.

I really hope so anyway as next week is going to be a busy one. I have the A-Soc holiday meal on Tuesday, then I have Wednesday off and then I have 4 back to back parties – work’s Christmas do, Jenna’s Christmas do, Sarann and Liz’s birthday party and then my mum’s birthday do.

Blogging

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008 | Life

I’m really struggling to keep up with my blogging at the moment. Not that I am not managing to do it but I have so many events to blog about that I haven’t got round to, I have drafts awaiting completion and other ideas which I really want to talk about.

I’m not sure sure why though, while my life certainly is busy, I’m not sure it is really any busier than it used to be. And I don’t think it’s apathy as I have been blogging on a regular basis regardless. Maybe I’m just getting old and can’t quite justify blogging at 2am when I have to be up for work a few hours after?

Corporate blogging

Thursday, October 9th, 2008 | Life

At Open Door Design we’ve just re-launched our brand and as part of it, we have added a blog to the website, the idea behind it being that it would give you a bit of an insight into the lives and thoughts of the people behind the company.

“It’s your blog and you can do what you want with it” I was told.

That was before my post was pulled lol. As was Tom’s. Apparently having a life outside of the company may suggest that he would be rather out there making films than be at work. Which is silly. Of course, we would :D. Film making is loads of fun, I should know having served on the committee of LUU Film Making Society for a year.

But there you go, that is corporate blogging. End of the day I guess it is down to the company and it’s not like they are restricting what I can see elsewhere like Leeds University Union try to do. It just seems to make the whole idea of the blog a little pointless.

Fresh faces

Thursday, August 7th, 2008 | Life

You’re probably reading this on Facebook or Netvibes.

Therefore it probably has slipped your attention that my homepage has a completely new look. Having managed to fix the site and looking for a new style to give the podcast mini site I decided that it would be better to just come up with a whole new look for everything and use that across the site.

And, for the first time, my blog has a separate skin which matches the main site as well! Finally, that integrated look which I know Kieran has been suggesting for so many years ;). So, give me your feedback, what do you think, does it work in your browser, have you found any problems?

You may notice once you start playing around that the image at the top keeps changing. At the moment there are only 6 that it “randomly” selects out of each time (I put randomly in quotes because most of us know how bad computers are at picking out random numbers, on saying that, humans are no better), two of them are photos – from graduation and Rationalist Week, two of them are collages of loads of different pictures of me and two are of composed of some of my favourite stock photography. As the months pass I’m hoping to add more and more until there is a sizeable library of them.

I think I’ll have myself a beer

Monday, July 14th, 2008 | Life

It occurs to me, as of last Friday, I’ve now been blogging 4 years.

Over that time I’ve clocked up a total of 1,328 posts. That works out as a little under one post per day (4 years is 1460 days). Looks like my posting average is slipping :p.
