Mr Foley’s

Monday, July 12th, 2010 | Events, Humanism

The June Skeptics in the Pub meeting was held at Mr Foley’s on The Headrow. It’s interesting that when you describe it as “opposite the art gallery” nobody really knows where you mean but as soon as you say “next door to Wildcats” everyone knows exactly where it is!

For the innocent of you, Wildcats is one of Leeds’ many strip joints.

June’s talk was by Stewart Richmond who is the man that proved magnetic bracelets are of course a load of nonsense. Good times.

A skeptical birthday

Sunday, January 24th, 2010 | Humanism

At Leeds Skeptics we recently celebrated our first birthday with a talk by Steve Wade on big foot and other urban legends entitled “What’s That Coming Over the Hill?” The talk was reasonably well attended given the weather outside though we didn’t get anyone working on the bar which was a little disappointing. Still plenty of drinks from the bar downstairs later and everyone was enjoying themselves so the good times continued.

Skeptics reboot

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009 | Events, News

Yesterday we re-launched the Leeds Skeptics in the Pub group with a new venue, new format and new speakers. The event went quite well despite Ariane have cancelled us on due to illness earlier the week – we got a better than average turn out and it was thumbs up all round for the new venue. We also took a lot of feedback about how we can improve in the future so we will continue to improve from here.

What the supermarkets aren’t telling you

Saturday, October 17th, 2009 | Events, Humanism

Today I delivered a talk which sounded ominously like a Channel 4 documentary to Leeds Skeptics in the Pub. It went reasonably well and discussions went on well into the afternoon so over all a good event. From now on we’re back to proper guest speakers too so things are looking quite good for Skeptics at the moment.

Pub lunching

Saturday, October 17th, 2009 | Life

As Paul in our office had a rather big birthday coming up (I won’t mention which one), we decided to head over to the pub on Thursday for a bit of lunch and a drink to celebrate. As such I really couldn’t say no so took a day off from cutting back on my spending.

In the end though Rob put the company card behind the bar so it didn’t actually cost me anything – therefore when it came to Friday and everyone was still up for the usual Friday lunch at the pub, I had effectively saved a pub lunch’s worth of money so technically I wasn’t spending any more than I would have 😀 . Good times.

Crazy Tuesdays

Thursday, August 27th, 2009 | Humanism

We started off Tuesday with a committee meeting which didn’t go too tell as it was noiser than we had anticipiated in the pub. We also had far more to talk about than we could possibly fit into one meeting and we had several non-committee members in attendance who had shown up also so it didn’t make for the most productive meeting.

The rest of the night went well though with much eating of stake and drinking of alcohol as should be expected from our Tuesday nights these days.

Long night drinkin’

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009 | Friends

On my way home from Aidan’s leaving do I decided to stop by The Library for a quick one just to say hi to everyone. Turns out that everyone was not that many people with none of the other committee being there, though apparantly Sophie had dropped by briefly earlier on.

So in the end to keep the party going I ended up staying there for a fare bit of time before getting a text with Nicola asking if we were still at the pub. I said we were going to be heading off soon but suggested we grab a quick pint down at the station so we ended up down there until nearly midnight, which didn’t really make for the early night I was hoping for but did give me chance to catch up with people which was good.

Graduation ’09

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009 | Friends

With Kieran up in Leeds for the SoC 2009 graduation we headed out on Monday night for a beer or two. While there was a very disappointing turnout it was never the less a very enjoyable evening start with some food at Wetherspoon’s before heading down to O’Neils and ending up back at ‘spoon’s for more drinks.

It was great to see a lot of people who seemed to be struggling at some point to come through with flying colours. Congratulations to all who made it!

Thursday night shenanigans

Friday, June 12th, 2009 | Friends, Humanism, Life

Having left work at about 6 last night I headed off to meet Nicola for the usual Thursday night HAG activities. It was a mildly successful night, there were a few people out so a bit better (or perhaps worse) than last week.

Finally pulled up outside my house at about 9pm when I got a text from Zoe inviting me down to the pub. Of course this left me with no option but to head out again (after all I hadn’t been to the pub since Tuesday at this point!)

It’s tough getting through these long nights but somehow I manage it 😀 .

Deer hunting

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 | Friends, Life, Thoughts

On Monday myself and Michelle headed out to the Deer Park to celebrate a number of different things including someone having received her teaching application (this is a landmark achievement for the Royal Mail).

It occured to me though that are days at the Deer Park maybe be looking limited. If you include the fact that I am spending the weekend after next in Warwick for the AHS national conference I only have 9 days left in Roundhay!

I will certainly miss it, there aren’t any overly nice pubs on my door step next year though there are plenty of cheap ones such as the Library and town just a few minutes walk away. In any case though I think a few trips out to the Deer Park at some point may be in order.
