The calm before the storm

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006 | Life

I feel like the next 72 hours of my life are going to be mental. I need to update my websites today and tomorrow within the next 5 hours preferably as tomorrow I start uni at 9 though until 2 and have filming to do at 6. This does give me 4 hours but my Python project needs attention and it’s like a two hour round trip to get back to Bod.

As soon as I’ve finished filming I need to get back to Bod for the final Grant House social of the term which is Bod Bar at like 8:00-8:30 then If afterwards. Then on Friday we are going out to lunch and going to the cinema in the evening. And I haven’t started packing and we get kicked out of Bod at 10 am on Saturday morning.

I really wanted to go to this grill a Christian thing on at Bod Bar tonight too, I still might. I’m torn. Maybe I will. Work can wait. Well, it can’t but I’m going to ignore that fact for now.

Not the early night I was aiming for

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006 | Life

I went to DEC-10 to get some Python done tonight (t now occurs to me on re-reading my blog I’ve already blogged about this a few hours ago lol). Myself and Michelle were there until after midnight and I got home about 1. Not too bad, I could get 7 1/2 hours sleep in before I needed to get up.

But I decided to go check out the free refreshments being put on by the Christian Union as religious events and discussions posess some quite strong interest for me. Not that there was massive amounts of discussion but I ended up staying there for like 2 hours. That said, free food :p.

So yeah, I should really get some sleep. I finished reading Sam Harris’s The End of Faith today which I will probably have to make a big post about sometime. I start my new book tomorrow, metaphorical prizes (that means not real ;)) for anyone who can guess correctly what I plan to read next. And in case anyone is tempted to think I am being somehow pulled in, no, it’s not the Bible.

Late night in DEC-10

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006 | Life

There are so many people here. Ok like a dozen of us, maybe 15 but come on, it’s nearly half past midnight. There could be more people in Eniac. And the reason no new people have come in is that you can’t get in after midnight. So context that is masses of people. If’s definitely the end of term :p.

I’ve been here since 8:45 which I guess is only 4 fours although Michelle has been here since 5. She was catching up on her Java then we were working on Python which has progressed quite well night, I can see things falling into place. I have one majorly complex thing to work out and then I think getting the basics done on the rest of it should be pretty simple. At least most of it should. We might even get it finished on time!

Quite a cool night

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006 | Life

Tonight was another night at Sarann’s (I’m going to miss them when they are gone although we did watch Star Trek: The Next Generation which almost got me in the mood for going home on Saturday) to which myself, Michelle, Graham, George and of course Sarann were present. I say of course, once me and Graham get our own keys it won’t have to include her ;).

Graham headed off early while me and Michelle got the 2:23 bus home. When I got back to Bodington the Christians were offering free food and drink. I went down to check it out and met a load of cool guys from Hey house (of which Gaz is on my course) and hung out in there for a while. I also met Stacey there, hence the previously posted video.

Opening new windows is silly

Monday, March 20th, 2006 | Life

There is a running battle with whether external hyperlinks should open in new windows. The answer is no. I’m not here to explain why, any article concerning usability can do that. I’m here to explain why even you’re own logic is flawed. When I say you, I’m refering to webmasters who open external links in new windows, I don’t know that you reading this now do.

Ok, so looking at it purely from a money grabbing webmaster’s point of view, the case of forcing users to open links in new windows is that they stay on your site. but if they want to leave, they will just close your window down and leave. However chances are they will go back to your site and when they go back fresh adverts are loaded up. More ads displayed. Any webmaster can see that’s a good thing (I know it could well be often cached depending on how you serve your ads but I think the point still holds).

Weekend conclusion

Monday, March 20th, 2006 | Life

Hmm, so yeah it’s Monday. As if you didn’t know. That said, the actual day isn’t offered on the timestamp unless you’re on the post’s seperate page so if you aren’t reading this today that could well be new information for you. Of course I could be lying to you but you are just going to have to trust me on this one.

I came in for my tutorial this morning, just. I set my alarm for 8:00 to get up and get some stuff done before I went to uni. When it woke me up I thought, hmm, no. Set it for 8:20. That woke me up and I thought, I’m not even going to do that and reset it for 8:30 for breakfast. Couldn’t be bothered to set it for breakfast and set it for 9:00. I don’t really need to be up that early if I rush, set it for 9:10. Finally got up at around 9:15, missed the 9:30 bus and got to my tutorial at about 10:07. Therefollowed a 15 minute tutorial with a guest appearance by Jimmy (the real Jimmy that is supposed to be in my group). That was a lot of effort to get up for.

Good weekend though. I think that is evident by my lack of blogging – I only made 6 posts during Friday, Saturday, Sunday! Ok, for a normal person that would be a lot of posts but I have some kind of addiction to telling the world about my entire life in intricate and no doubt often tedious detail.

And yet it does apparently have some interest, even if only limited. For instance I’m aware that Michelle and Fran were reading over it to see what I had written about them. To that end, Michelle and Fran are great, I really like them!

Anyway so yeah I was concluding the weekends activities. I rushed out to Moorish after blogging yesterday to listen to the live music – the one that starts at 8 and you need to be there at 7 to get a seat. 9 pm, the music starts and half the seats are still available. But it was still cool, they do great wraps and we tried an apple flavoured shisha pipe (as upossed to strawberry on our first visit). So that is a second time. The currupting hand of Sarann strikes again.

Just enough time to blog

Sunday, March 19th, 2006 | Life

Mental 24 hours. Went to The Wendy House last night with Sarann, Michelle, Fran, Fonze, Lunn and John. Awesome night although Fonze got absolutely wasted and ended up throwing up everywhere, I lost my coat, Fran lost of wallet (though both were arguably stolen) and we missed the bus. But until then it was great :D.

It actually was a good night. I crashed at Michelle’s (there actually was another bus but Metro denied it’s existence in both their timetables and their “real-time tracking services” you can text) due to missing the bus and in the forming we went into town and met Sarann at Wokmania for lunch. I think that’s a valid move considering I missed my meal at Bod although I’m never going to eat all those microchips now :p.

CNet are lying to you (of course)

Saturday, March 18th, 2006 | Life

Few major website networks abuse search engines like CNet. Classic example. I need to get hold of some sample MP3’s so I run a search across Google for “free mp3 downloads.” The top 2 results are CNet’s MP3.com and CNet’s Download.com. Neither of which actually offer MP3 downloads! What they do offer is some free audio streams. Which are of no use to me.

Luckily Amazon to the rescue listed down in 9th, they actually do offer free MP3 downloads. Go Amazon!

Amusing clothing labels fact file #1

Product information that give you good sensible advice. It makes a chance to see them in this modern world of ours.

While browsing Socalite’s Life I came across this which is quite amusing.

A cocktail of fun

Saturday, March 18th, 2006 | Life

What a witty and relevant title huh? :p.

Anyway so yeah, we spent tonight at Sarann’s. It’s St. Patrick’s Day as I mentioned earlier and you probably know already but yeah, the buses were mental so it took forever to get everyone on.

I met Fran who is great, it’s good to know that there is someone else who doesn’t appreciate their parents taking them on holiday :D.

Myself and Michelle went shopping on Thursday and bought loads of alcohol and fruit juice of which we didn’t actually get through much. I think there may have been a slight over-estimation on how much we would drink though Graham, Maths Chris, George and Anne were all on the maybe list so it could have been double the size.
