Another close at The D

Monday, February 19th, 2007 | Life

Tonight was an interesting night. First of all, we were only scheduled 3 closers (there should be 4 on a weekend). Then Amanda phoned in sick so Rich agreed to stay on – having been on a day shift and started work at 9:30. Clocking out just before 2:30 that measures up to a shift of almost 17 hours. My marathon shift got out at 2:30 with me having started at 10 so he topped me by 24 minutes.

Not a bad close time though given we had no staff in the kitchen. Literally. With us being a closer down I was by myself in the kitchen and my last crew member on a night shift went home at 8:30. I usually lose the last one at about 11. Still, that’s it for another weekend of working, now I can get several hours sleep before I have to be up for uni.

My car, my beautiful car

There is a big dent in my car door! It would seem some retard has managed to slam their car door into the side of mine while in the car park at The D yesterday! This is so not cool.

February Wendy House

Sunday, February 18th, 2007 | Life

Hmm. So I got up Saturday morning and headed off to work for a fun day shift. Didn’t drag too much after the first few hours though so I survived. Headed off just after 8 via Tesco and hit The Old Bar at a decent time. My plans for for a quiet pre-drink where somewhat overthrown by the fact I had forgotten The Old Bar hosts New Slang on Saturday though.

Total Wendy turnout was myself, John, Sophie, Verity, Phil and Cara (the usual Wendy attendees really, not that I’m complaining, it’s a good crowd) plus Sophie’s sister Amy also eventually turned up with her friend Dave. The music took forever to get going it but it finally did just before 2 and quickly went from bland to awesome so it’s all good.

The night ended with the traditional appointment at Pizza Milano who had run out of chicken – that’s that about? Went home alone too. Still, all in all, not a bad night. Gave me a bit of chance to start sorting out my room too which I’m battling to get back to a nice and tidy state.

Every day I love you less and less

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Life

It’s been another long day. Did taekwondo 5-7 which was pretty good, we did some practice kicks, I almost new what I was doing for a lot of it so it’s all good. After that I headed off home for a family deal as it’s my uncles 50th birthday. Just got back from there as it happens.

Unfortunately this means I won’t get to bed until 2am at the earliest and I have a day shift, 12-8 tomorrow due to the fact I booked off the evening for Wendy House so I’m only going to get like 9 hours sleep in at most. I know that sounds like plenty but Saturday morning is my ONE day a week when I let myself have a nice sleep in. Every other day I’m working on less sleep than I would like, and i really, really love sleep so Saturday mornings are the one time of the week I look forward to more than anything else.

On the plus side it means that Wendy is tomorrow night. Though lots of people are bailing on it. Michelle, Sarann, Maths Chris, Izzy to name a few. I’m used to it now though, you lot are well rubbish. The hardcore members, namely myself, Sophie and Verity are all putting in appearances as usual. Sophie has promised not to get quite so drunk this time :D.

So yeah it’s going to be another mental weekend as normal. Working tomorrow, then rushing back to uni for Wendy then rushing back home next day to get the car back, then going to work, working all night and then getting up at some unpleasent time on Monday to get back to uni to begin my even more mental weekday schedule.

JD at The Old Bar

Friday, February 16th, 2007 | Life

Dan had the chance to come out for the night tonight which is a most rare occasion since a child fell out of his girlfriend. So we hit The Old Bar along with Si, Izzy and Michelle for a night of laid back drinking. It was a good night, we managed to keep the topic off computing for most of the night which is impressive for our circle and indeed it stayed off World of Warcraft as well.

Defrag

Friday, February 16th, 2007 | Life

I started Defragging my old laptop earlier and it’s a mission. It spent well over an hour on 1% before stopping for no apparent reason. It didn’t lock it just stopped as if it had completed. Yet when I ran the analysis again it told me I needed to defrag. So I’m now on the second iteration. It’s done 28% though it’s been there for ages.

Valentine’s Day

Thursday, February 15th, 2007 | Life

Today (by now technically yesterday) was the day of singles-bashing known as Valentine’s Day. So names after Sir Markus Valentine ripped out the heart of a lion with his bare hands and presented it to his fiance to show her there is nothing he would not do for her (hence all the hearts used in connection with the holiday).

Sadly she didn’t appreciate it but that part of the story is forgotten. Anyway, I made it to my IS23 lecture after much debate as to whether I should sleep through it or not. I then grabbed some lunch, went to a meeting in the union about our society bank accounts, went to the Llama, went to film making society, went back to the Llama, went for dinner, went back to the Llama again and then went home.

Film making society was a failure of an event, we were holding auditions but only one person turned up. It’s such a shame that there is so much talent out at Bretton Hall but because it’s so hard to get the word out, so few people actually show up.

After leaving the Llama for the final time (because they once again closed before 11, how rubbish is that?) myself, Si and Izzy headed back to mine and watched a little Futurama. Speaking of Si and Izzy, what’s going on between them? :p. They were together when I arrived at the Llama, alone after Izzy had explained over the phone she was naked, they’ve been chatting on MSN constantly apparently, they were together until the early hours of tonight and disappeared off together. A story for SoC gossip me thinks.

In the Wake of Darwin

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007 | Life

The Humanist Society of West Yorkshire was holding a talk entitled “In the Wake of Darwin” last night so me and a few follow society members went down to the talk. It was really enjoyable, Judith Hart who was giving the door talked us through his life during the Voyage of the Beagle when he did the key work that got him thinking about this whole creationism thing.

Afterwards the few of us that were left headed down to Joseph’s Well for a few drinks. It seemed like an alright place though the live bands aren’t great when you’re not there to listen to them.

Watford Electronics temporarily closed

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007 | Life

I logged on to Savastore.com, the online branch of Watford Electronics which is one of the best online computer parts retailers around to find it had closed down. This sucks, Watford was ace; way better than Dabs, eBuyer or CCL for most stuff and I used it more than any other online retailer for buying computer related stuff.

It’s apparently only closed temporarily while their new owner, Globally Ltd takes over and has done a “full review of both business and technological processes.” There is a letter about it here.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The letter has been removed, so I have removed the link.

An original plan for a Monday night

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007 | Life

Monday’s can only mean one thing. It’s Monday. However as usual we also headed down to The Old Bar for a drinking session. There was only a few of us (namely me, Michelle, Norm, Kieran and Si) which was nice as it’s about the optimum level between holding a good conversation and still being able to include everyone. Having taken my laptop I also got in some coding too so it’s all good.

We ended up staying until kicking out time (with the exception of Si) and then headed to mine via the takeaway. What followed was some even more in-depth debates on subjects such as people who like to role-play rape, my impending marriage to Laurie Anne, depression, phyological disorders, the adult industry and a range of other topics. Good old fashioned post-pub conversation.
