Running dry

Friday, May 29th, 2009 | Humanism, Life

Last night with HAG we, for the first time ever, ran out of coffee. I’m not sure whether this is a good thing or a bad thing as it means there are plenty of people to once again receive said coffee but this can be put down to the fact that our Thursday night excursions have been a bit patchy recently and so the issue has managed to gain a foothold again.

It can also be attributed to the fact that I only made half as much coffee as normal because we only get through half of it at best usually. Luckily we didn’t have to turn anyone down though, we just cut the night short. This resulted in us being back in time to watch Question Time so it all worked out in the end 😉 .

HAG

As usual myself, Nicola and Rich headed out last night for our traditional wander round even given there are so few people out these days (what can I say, we’ve just too good at solving problems).

Annoyingly we ended up walking past the appartment I got beaten to bringing up some bad memories (it was so perfect, I’m trying hard to move on but I’m not sure I can) but otherwise it was a good night, we kept the focus on it being a good mix between helping and gossiping about people which was always the dream really.

Chicken stew

On Thursday myself and Rich headed out to continue our work for the newly formed Humanist Action Group.

Rich had cooked up a chicken strew this week which we were hoping would be a little more popular than soup but apparently not. This was probably due to the fact that there were less people out this week but it didn’t help when one of them turns out to be a vegetarian.

It is good to see some people are really getting somewhere though, one woman who we talk to every week now has a job selling The Big Issue and as such is getting a house from the council too. It’s almost inspiring to think that we have only been doing this a few weeks and we’re already seeing people get back on their feet (not by anything we’ve done or anything, it’s just nice to see).

The cold streets

On Thursday myself and Rich headed out once again, this time joined by Nicola, to do our bit. We were going to do a bit of cooking beforehand but Rich was unfortunately detained at work and so we ended up doing soup again, not that it is overly a bad choice.

There seems to be a fair bit of interest in the group now which hopefully will continue to grow and we can expand our activities.

Doing our bit

Rich having become increasingly flustrated with the lack of action in Humanist communities suggested that we should really be getting out there and doing good work and leading by example. As such, last Thursday (the 12th) we headed out to feed the homeless.

It was an interesting experience. We took soup and coffee which went down reasonably well although most of them weren’t overly interested in the soup, they just wanted the coffee. It’s also suprising how few of them there actually are on the streets.

Interestingly enough though there isn’t that much support in Leeds. There is one shelter, St. George’s Crypt but that is basically all there is. Maybe it’s just not that much of a problem but it was certainly nice to be able to provide those that were out with a hot drink.
