I nearly got sued #3

Thursday, January 19th, 2006 | Life

I think it’s 3, I loose count. Also I didn’t count the problems with the photos I took at my school and there is something else I didn’t count but yeah anyway, so, it happened again. I think it’s worth noting that this kind of talk gets thrown around a lot of the net though and most of it is BS. But that’s not saying you don’t have to be careful.

I got an email from the editor of the Dev Shed network concerning CassieNet News which if your not familar with is kind of like the Internet Archive for RSS feeds. However Dev Shed weren’t happy about their content being included. They didn’t mention this on their site or RSS feed though, neither of which have terms of use attached. But it’s not a major problem as they emailed me and I took it down for them, I was happy to do so.

Never the less the original email did contain the phrase:

before we have to resort to legal measures

Also when I responded I got an email from Spam Arrest saying I needed to go to their site to confirm this wasn’t spam before the e-mail would be passed along. Ironically the e-mail telling me to do this got caught my my spam filter. Luckily I checked it for false-positives and saw it as I may just have deleted it and he would never have got my response. It’s a joke that Spam Arrest can’t keep their own emails out of the spam traps though.

The other thing I don’t like about Spam Arrest is that you have to agree to a bunch of terms and conditions that involves paying huge fines if you do sent commerical e-mails. Not that I would ever do that or plan to do that, but what if I didn’t want to agree to the terms? It’s like the government spying on you and saying “well if you’re not doing anything illegal what do you have to worry about?” It still doesn’t make it ok.

Worfolk Shopping has something on it

Thursday, January 19th, 2006 | Life

Yes, it’s true, Worfolk Shopping now has some actual content. I’ve had the domain since 2004 and never actually done anything with it, at least now it has something on, even if it is only an Amazon powered site. It’s a start at least.

Nearly 5 years online

Thursday, January 19th, 2006 | Life

I just added a closing date field to the database for the history of sites and noticed that Old M World was launched in April of 2001. That’s almost 5 years old! That’s amazing, I didn’t realise that it was such a long time ago since the site was launched.

Old M World is gone, BB is here

Thursday, January 19th, 2006 | Life

Yes, it’s sad. Old M World has finally been taken offline now that Boltblue have taken all the Cable and Wireless servers. It was up for many a year before they took it down recently but that’s life. I had the insight to make a backup of the site before it went (that was like a year or two ago I think) although it’s just a HTTP copier tool so it probably didn’t get all the files.

Still, it has most of what was there so I am happy enough. It’s now been removed from the Worfolk Online database, I think it could well be the first ever to be. Well it’s actually now in the history section but it’s no longer listed on the site nor is any information accessable at the moment as that hasn’t been implimented yet nor do I have any plans to do it in the near future.

On the plus side though, a new site, Britney Beats is now online.

Oceana, it sucks

Wednesday, January 18th, 2006 | Life

I’ve never been a fan of the place because they spell it Oceana yet pronounce it Oceania. But Oli invited me out so I thought I would go for an hour or so. We got there about 9:40-9:45 or something and got straight in. Word to the wise, if you do go there, get there before 10 as they have plenty of bars to hang out in before you go on to the club and the queues just get mental.

But anyway yeah, it sucks. It’s just a bunch of rooms which are in theory themed (ok some of the rooms are different but several of them are very samey). Also First Port which is like the first bar as you go in has an aweful alchol pop choice. Is it really that hard to stock Reef? It’s not that cheap either.

Bottom line is, it’s going on the list. It’s a trendy place. On the plus side the girls are really hot but it’s like Gatecrasher, it’s an ultra-trendy place that happens to let students in and I don’t like those places. Oh and Lindsay Lohan is not appropriate music to play in there.

General life update

Wednesday, January 18th, 2006 | Life

Had another exam today, human computer interaction. I think I got through that without too many problems which is cool. I have my final one tomorrow so going out would probably be a bad idea tonight. So yeah, I’m going to Oceana tonight ;). Not staying long though, getting up early to get some revision done tomorrow.

Mental VNU activity

The video news updates for xmeltrut.com have been scoring some serious viewing on Google Video. Well not serious but more than I had expected. I pulled up the report to find a few 10-20 page views and realised that was the report for yesterday!

So I pulled up the report for December and the two Hilary Duff videos that I had both got over 1,000 page views. This is all through search, I’m not linking to them. But maybe I should be if it’s taking serious bandwidth from my sites.

In the latest 7 days Britney Spears has two videos with around 300 views and Hilary has one too. Avril Lavigne tops it though with a 339.

GoDaddy dropping the ball

Tuesday, January 17th, 2006 | Life

I’ve noticed GoDaddy have been dropping the ball a bit lately. Recently they began talking (or at least took one) torrent site domains down [ Link ]. There was a big backlash about that is the domain registrar is nothing to do with the website content and it’s not up to GoDaddy to police the internet.

Then a few days ago they suspended NecTarTech.com [ Link ] because one of their servers in their datacenters was hacked. Think about this – because someone hacked a server, they took the domain of the host offline. So because of that, thousands of domains were down. And GoDaddy’s 24/7 support said they couldn’t fix it for days.

This isn’t good as I was moving from RegisterFly to GoDaddy assuming I would be with a better company.

Still at least there were some amusing responses…

GoDaddy Sucks, plain and simple, they can have all the soft-core porn Super Bowl commercials they want, but they still suck.

I’m a little left wondering what to do now though. eNom maybe? They seem to have a good rep among the domain and webmaster community.

Ok, it’s not that close but it’s close.

Time offset

Monday, January 16th, 2006 | Life

My blog was offset by +1 hour which I thought was server-wide but it turns out it was set like that in WordPress. I guess it was for DST, I’ve changed it now.
