The morning after

Sunday, February 19th, 2006 | Life

Sarann’s timing is awful. She was aiming to be there for 10, she got in at 11:20! Still it was a wicked night, we even had Fonze dancing by the end of it. Also Friday Flock is back! It doesn’t actually return until April but there is hope for it yet.

The Wendy House

Saturday, February 18th, 2006 | Life

Tonight is the 3rd Saturday of the month which can mean several things, one of which is that it’s The Wendy House at the Union. It’s the biggest alternative night in the north with alternative meaning goth ;). Although to be fair some none goths do turn up and the rooms are divided into 80’s, hardcore gothic type stuff and indie so it really is more of an alternative night that just happens to attract many a goth.

I’m meeting Fonze in 15 minutes and we’re going to spent much, much time shooting pool and waiting for Sarann to turn up. She is planning to get there for 10 but it’s Sarann so the chances of her making it on time are pretty slim :p. Michelle has left for the weekend to go to Cardiff and Oli is out of money but I was determined that nothing would distrupt the plan. Because I like plans. Plans are good.

I actually got thinking about planning and such earlier. I can’t work out whether I am a bit of a control freak when it comes to movies and events and stuff. I mean I take control and don’t like my vision distrupted but I hate producing and organising stuff it’s so stressful. And with events, it’s just nobody else really seems to take control and get things organised. I like organisation, taxomony, etc, although the state of my room doesn’t really reflect that. But my filing system on my computer does. I guess I’m just a man of many contradictions.

For laughs

I just read the Big Rigs: Over The Road Racing review (and watched the video review too) again. It’s one of the funiest things you could well ever read :p.

Morning comes

Saturday, February 18th, 2006 | Life

Wow, I got through the night and haven’t given up on AudioSenate.net :D. I’ve been doing some more work on it this morning. The user’s can now submit reviews for moderation so I just need to finish off the moderation panel, add in some way to notify me when a review is submitted and some way of telling users they can email me to request a new artist and we are sorted.

I want to get it done as I’m trying to get all my sites going a bit. Owning loads of domains is actually a valid option as long as all of them are generating some traffic and money so I’m trying to troubleshoot the sites that are underperforming and not using much bandwidth to try and get some all doing something even if it isn’t much.

I have a Netscape email address

Friday, February 17th, 2006 | Life

I’d like to thank AOL for giving me a heads up about opening my new email account. I was getting plagued by “you have mail” type messages when I launched Trillian which is a little wierd considering the fact that I just have an AIM account not an AOL account with email and the whole lot.

I finally got over to the support forums where I found this thread however which informed me that they are now signing everyone up for an @netscape.net account. They must really be desperate. Who is going to use it? Everyone loves gMail and those who don’t use Hotmail or a really cool extention. Nobody is going to use these new accounts.

Another AudioSenate.net update

Friday, February 17th, 2006 | Life

Though I’m probably going to forget about it tomorrow and never finish it, the development is going well. The dynamic images thing was crap so I scrapped it and put useful features in – the albums are not automatically indexed and have track information too.

What I need to do now is allow people to submit reviews and put in some kind of moderation system too and I think that pretty much takes care of everything.

Oh I need to sort out the ads too :p.

AudioSenate.net development

Friday, February 17th, 2006 | Life

I’ve been putting some work in on AudioSenate.net. The old system wasn’t working well enough so there is going to be a new one which automatically indexes the albums from each artist and will contain more information, not just reviews.

WordPress 2 performance issues

Friday, February 17th, 2006 | Life

I’m getting some massive performance issues with any posts I insert a photo into on WordPress 2. It’s pretty bad, whatever I post actually, as I’ve mentioned before. I’m annoyed dammit.

Don’t control my windows

Friday, February 17th, 2006 | Life

Ok, webmaster tip. Don’t control my windows! If I want a new window, I will open one. I don’t need the link to open one for me when I am going from the homepage to the gallery page. And if it’s an external link that opens in a new window I will close the new window, open the link in a new tab and close the existing one. So it’s not doing you any good.

Also, JavaScript links. Don’t use them! It’s not big and it’s not clever. Like the MySpace keywords that need JavaScript to open so if I want to hold Ctrl down and open a load of them in new tabs in Firefox, none of them work so the only thing I can do is open them in the current window. That’s probably worse than opening new windows. Use standard links and add JavaScript to the event tags such as onClick where they belong.

Yahoo are pretty nice guys

Thursday, February 16th, 2006 | Life

Recently I was in a conversation where someone said that Google was seen as the non-evil alternative to Yahoo. I have never considered this the case. I have always thought (and thought many others shared the same view) that Yahoo is the non-evil alternative to MSN.

But that’s not what this post is about. It’s about the Yahoo UI Library. Yahoo have been doing a bit here and there for developers already working on the media RSS standard dealie.

Now they have this UI thing which is a library of JavaScript components that you can download and use including some stuff for AJAX, drag and drop elements, it all sounds pretty cool. I recommend you check it out.

They also have a Design Pattern Library thing which shows some of the uses and such.
