Another point down

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011 | Friends

Last Friday was Simon S’s last day at Buzz, which was unfortunate as, as a Leeds graduate, he was one point in favour of the Leeds side of the office (as opposed to the Leeds Met side). Never the less, he is leaving to return to the university to undertake a PhD – something the other side doesn’t really suffer from ;).

We saw him off in the usual manner – by hitting The Original Oak for lunch and getting the shots in. At one point Rebecca suggested we should do one shot per week – something that worries myself and Jason, who would now have to do over 100 shots to leave!

Poker Night

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011 | Events, Friends

It has been eight months since our last poker night, which is far too long a time, so I decided it was time to get another one going.

Given to make it feel like a true Vegas poker night, we of course need bunny hostesses, I invited Kat and Elina stating clearly on the invite they “are also welcome to attend as we need people to wait on us and mix drinks.”

For some unknown reason however, despite Wench Vicky and Batgirl Rebecca, they thought we were joking. Sometimes, I worry our friends don’t even know us… As a result, they were somewhat surprised when they were handed their outfits.

The game carried on long into the night – well, until around 11pm, which when you get to my age, that is rather late. In the end Kat and Jonni were the only people left in so decided to call it there.

Row One’s anniversary

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011 | Friends

Last Wednesday, myself and Jason, collectively known at Buzz as Row One, celebrated our second anniversary. Despite his recent engagement to Sarah, our bond remains as strong as ever as as such we celebrated by going for a romantic meal at West End House. Accompanied by JB, Ian and Average Matt.

Wendy House

Saturday, June 25th, 2011 | Events, Friends

Last Saturday we hit Wendy House to celebrate Oli’s birthday (as if he wouldn’t be going anyway lol). Unfortunately Viki got in a mood and refused to come, and banned George from going as well.

Never the less we pushed forward and Sarann set around customising Norm appropriately for the evening. Turns out he pulls off the top hat very well.

McNight Out

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011 | Friends, Life

On Thursday I finally got up with some old friends who worked with me at The D.

It was somewhat disappointing that Elina didn’t instantly fall in love with Nando’s, but we had a great night away heading up to the much loved Cuthbert Brodrick afterward and finished the night at Revolution.

Ungrateful Italians

Monday, June 20th, 2011 | Friends

Italy is a crazy place. It has some amazing sights but you literally take your life in your hands when you drive on their roads and all their cafes and restaurants close between 12 and 3 for lunch!

On the hole, Italians are very friendly people. That’s technically prejudice, I’ve only met a small section of the Italian population so I can’t really judge them all as friendly but as people don’t seem to mind positive stereotypes (or even negative stereotypes as long as they think they are positive – most Americans are flattered when you call them patriotic, the socially acceptable little brother of racism) though so I’m going to continue with that statement.

Unfortunately, there is a small minority of Italians which are simply ungrateful.

For example, this girl:

Elettra is in the process of moving house, and she didn’t have anywhere to put her rather large keyboard for a week. That’s this one:

Luckily, this good looking hero stepped up, when she asked him if she could store it in his apartment:

You would imagine she would be grateful for that.

So when someone else in the conversation suggested that it would be a great prop for a Jimmy Turtlehouse film, you would think at very least she would laugh along politely.

Of course, this is an entirely hypothetical situation, given I have no contact with the amazing rock star legend that is Jimmy Turtlehouse. But still.

As a consequence, you would presume then that when you come to help actually move the keyboard into your apartment, you won’t be greeted with sentences such as “even if you wanted to use the keyboard for your movies, you can’t, as I’ve got the charger!”

Ungrateful is what it is, ungrateful.

The flip side

Of course, Twitter isn’t always informed opinion.

Norm fires up the grill

Monday, May 30th, 2011 | Friends, Life

With Viki pretending to be ill to avoid paying for breakfast, like the cheap Mackem she is, and keeping George firmly under her thumb while at it, it fell to Norm to fire up the grill for this month’s post-Wendy fry up. He didn’t disappoint.

Chaopraya

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011 | Food, Friends, Reviews

Work having shat all over my Friday night plans where I was supposed to be delivering a session of the Answers course at Atheist Society and then spending some time with Elina, I eventually made it home around 9pm, still in need of grabbing some dinner.

So, having rescheduled Elina to tomorrow, myself and George headed out to grab some much needed food. While I had heard some mixed reviews since the last time I went, they consistently delivered again with some amazing food. My Weeping Tiger actually tasted more of beef than tiger, but then I’ve never actually had tiger, so maybe it tastes the same.

Elbow Room

Saturday, May 21st, 2011 | Friends, Life

Last week we headed over to Elbow Room to shoot some pool.

It’s a great place to play as they have plenty of room (as Norm pointed out – the name is probably derived from the fact you have enough elbow room to play) though they are American pool tables which means the pockets are massive and so the chance of you potting the white quickly becomes more of a when than an if, even if you put some thought into it.

In the end myself, Norm and George all came out three wins to two defeats, most of which were won or lost on the white following the black into the pocket lol. Fonze played well also, beating George in the last game, though he did have the advantage that he wasn’t drinking.
