HCoL February

Monday, February 13th, 2012 | Foundation, Humanism

It had been a while since the last meeting of the Humanist Community of Leeds – we didn’t have a January meeting due to conflicts with New Year and the week after, so this meeting was our first since the start of December. It was cold and icy outside, so big thanks to all those who made the effort and braved the freezing temperatures.

December Humanist Community

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011 | Events, Foundation

Despite the cold and the train, December’s Humanist Community meeting was well attended and enjoyed by all. After all, the colder it is outside, the more a good Sunday Roast is appreciated! Conversation continued long into the night with this month’s topics including foreign policy, education and what everyone’s holiday plans were.

September Humanist Community

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011 | Foundation, Humanism

Despite there being very little of summer left here in the UK, the weather remained warm enough for us to sit outside at the September meeting of the Humanist Community of Leeds. This month both religion and politics were discussed – it’s a wonder how we all remain friends with such divisive topics! As ever of course though, the discussions remained good natured and very much enjoyable.

August Humanist Community

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011 | Foundation, Humanism

Despite many of our members being unable to attend because they were at Leeds Pride, the August meeting of Humanist Community was both well attended and a fascinating evening.

The topic of conversation covered social justice, balancing freedom of expression with protection of people’s safety, world languages, equality and whether the sausages Gijsbert had been given were actually vegetarian or not – turns out they weren’t, so it was a good job we had such a good discussion about it and checked before he started eating!

June Humanist Community

Sunday, June 12th, 2011 | Events, Foundation, Humanism

Last Sunday saw the June meeting of the Humanist Community of Leeds. This month’s meeting saw a very elaborate array of discussions with topics ranging from The moral landscape and global politics to exactly how you should cook extra thick steak. Big thanks to Gijsbert for his excellent news round up as usual.

Saved

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011 | Humanism

Last week, Atheist Society were taking it easy during the exam period, with a screening of the film Saved. It has an important moral message – that we need to book Michael into Mercy House. He didn’t seem to keen on the idea though.

Afterward, we headed down to Stick or Twist, where I enjoyed a free mixed grill after having filled out all the required stamps on my loyalty card 😀 .

May Humanist Community

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011 | Humanism

Despite many people taking advantage of the four day weekend around May Day and going away, we decided to go ahead with May’s meeting of Humanist Community.

Turn out turned out to be higher than expected and interestingly, we even had a predominantly young audience with over half the people attending being under 30! Discussions were enjoyable, though not particularly heated – when we discussed the royal wedding, everyone just agreed. Great minds and all that I guess 😀 .

Sunday Club

Friday, April 29th, 2011 | Friends, Life

Enjoying the long weekend, we headed over to Stick or Twist to enjoy Sunday Club – a traditional roast dinner in true Wetherspoon’s style (ie, with a beer). After leaving we went in search of an ice cream, only to find that none of the ice cream vans were to be found. What kind of lazy ice cream people can’t be bothered to work on Easter Sunday?

Pub quiz

Sunday, March 27th, 2011 | Humanism

Recently, Atheist Society has really taken to fusing it’s events with steak nights. It’s a winning combination.

So recently we all headed down to Stick or Twist for a pub quiz created by the defacto quiz master Michael who did an excellent job of coming up with a quiz, despite the usual Italian bias. Craziest of all as people’s spirits began to run high, I even heard Elina shouting at one point – turns out she does have a volume other than quiet 😉 .

To stick, or to twist

Saturday, March 5th, 2011 | Humanism

On Tuesday, Atheist Society hit Stick and Twist for what was officially a Think and Drink, though more importantly was also steak night at Wetherspoon’s :D.
