York in daylight

Sunday, April 26th, 2009 | Events, Life

Heading over to the April meetup of the York Brights group I was finally able to get there while it was daylight. Therefore I took the opportunity to get a few photos in as I walked past the Minster.

The group meetup itself was excellent as usual and rather well attended this month so it made for plenty of interesting conversation. Plus it was a chance to talk about Rationalist Week to a whole new group of people 😀 .

Friends wall

Thursday, January 29th, 2009 | Friends

Having spent the last few weeks annoying people for pictures of me and them, and annoying people even more by pushing other people out of such photos so I could get a shot of just myself and the other person, I have finally finished my friends wall.

If you’re not on the wall, well, tough luck, turns out I don’t like you.

Well, that’s not strictly true, I don’t think I turned down anyone to be on the wall, I just didn’t have good photos of most of my friends hence why I have spent the last few weeks annoying people for photos.

Hopefully I’ll be able to sort out photos with everyone else in the future and put them on some kind of random rotation.

New header images

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009 | News

The observant of you may have noticed that there are some new header images on rotation on my website and blog. These are in keeping with the original header images – one stock shot, one hero shot and one collage. I’m planning on expanding the amount of images in rotation over time though I only want to do it when I have interesting images to add.

The first one is just an image I picked up off iStock which I loved.

The second is a photo of me blogging, I might re-shoot this at some point in the future as it didn’t come out exactly how I wanted it but then I thought it somewhat of a lost cause to translate my imagination into photography and so got as close as I could.

Finally the collage is a few of my old school pictures from back in the day when I was at high school, or at least six form. Given appropriate aging effects, of course.

Facebook photos

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008 | Tech

Facebook have really been dropping the ball recently.

I don’t know what they have done to their photos uploader, but whatever they have done has broken it. I can’t say I’ve ever really had a problem with in until about a month ago when I started having a few problems, which have just started getting worse and worse.

For one thing it started crashing when I tried to upload large numbers of images. This has really annoyed me when uploading images for AHS Conference and London were I would be uploading 60 images at a time (into seperate album because for some, no doubt pointless reason, Facebook only allows 60 images per album) it would send them all which as you can imagine takes a long time and then crashes when it finishes.

The uploads are constantly failing too. Which again seems to wait until it has completed and all the images have been sent to bring up the normally “upload successful” dialog which comes up saying the upload has failed and you should try again. Which you possibly should, but not right away as the dialog would seem to indicate because it will just go on failing.

And to top it all off now, the “simple uploader” to use if their main uploader isn’t working, now rather than letting you upload the photos just sends you back to the main uploader without saving the photos, which, once again of course, sends all the data first which keeps you waiting for ages, before disgarding it all. Brilliant.

Chef’s special

So, apparently Nando’s do chicken brain now. It worked out quite well with me having my new camera as we could get good photos.

Our resident neuroscientist Rosie says she can’t say for sure if it was indeed a brain but it sure looks like one and having spent hours researching it she assures me it definitely isn’t a liver or kidney and Oli points out that the reason it doesn’t quite look like you would expect is that it would shrink during the cooking process.

Nando’s remained defiant it wasn’t a brain although the manager admitted it was in the end (after saying, well if you wish to believe it’s a brain to which I of course replied “yes, yes I do”) so who can say. The important thing is Kate got a voucher because that’s really what you want after finding a brain in your chicken 😀 .

One Life strikes again

Saturday, October 25th, 2008 | Events, Humanism

Once again Friday saw a well attended One Life course where we were discussing ethics. It was an interesting session, we spent most of the night with me arguing in favour of objective morality to get the debate going which was fun 😀 .

Photos of the event can be found on Facebook.

What credit crunch? Part 2

Sunday, October 5th, 2008 | Life

Ever wondered what a £50 note looks like?

It has been a good day for cash intake lol. Our landlord refunded the money he owed us. Seriously though, who carries around £50 notes in their wallet?

Money

Ha, yeeeah. That’s just a few hundred pounds I happened to have in cash.

I don’t actually have any spare cash, I just happened to get my expenses back from A-Soc today. It needs to go into my bank account ASAP to make the books balanace this month but until the bank opens tomorrow I’ve got nothing else to do than look smug 😉 .
