Leeds Tornadoes

Monday, December 9th, 2013 | News, Sport

Do you like american football? Want to get more exercise? Don’t fancy the idea of a crippling injury? Then flag football just might be for you! Flag is a faster-paced non-contact version of the game in which instead of tackling people you have to strip a flag from their waist. No blocking or kicking either – so you have to move fast!

The Leeds Tornadoes flag football team is starting in January and are now looking for people to get involved, either as players or as coaches, volunteers, cheerleaders and fans. You can sign up to the mailing list on their website or find them on Facebook.

Sunday Assembly Leeds

Sunday, December 8th, 2013 | Humanism, Photos

In October, we launched Sunday Assembly Leeds with the help of London-founder Sandison Jones. 120 people turned out for the event as well as BBC Look North, BBC Radio 4 and plenty of other media too. We held it in the beautiful St John the Evangelist’s Church next to the St John’s Centre (surprisingly).

Wendy House playlist

Monday, November 18th, 2013 | Distractions

Leeds based club night The Wendy House basically never change their playlist. It’s comforting. As Hugh points out, you don’t need a watch because you can tell what time it is by which rendition of Sweet Dreams they are currently playing.

The advantage of this is that I’ve been able to make a note of all the songs they played (although we didn’t arrive until 12:30) and published them on a Spotify playlist. It’s shared, you can find it here. Drop me a message with any songs I’ve missed and I’ll add them.

Simon Singh at Leeds Skeptics

Thursday, November 7th, 2013 | Events, Foundation, Humanism

Last month, Simon Singh came to Leeds Skeptics to promote his new book, The Simpsons and their Hidden Mathematical Secrets.

Turn out was excellent, we had 85 people there, topping our previous record of 68. We had to move a lot of the tables out of the room, move extra chairs in and still had people queuing out of both doors.

Simon put on a very entertaining talk and it was a pleasure to host him.

Anxiety Leeds October meeting

Monday, October 21st, 2013 | Foundation

Last week we held the second meeting of Anxiety Leeds, a new self-help group for people living with anxiety.

We got off to a great start with the first meeting in September and this month’s meeting built in that success with even more people turning up and giving us positive feedback. We saw some returning faces and some new. There was such much discussion going on that we actually had to interrupt to bring the session to a close after it ran over!

It’s great to see people getting benefit from the group and we’re hoping to reach even more people. If anyone is willing and able to distribute some flyers for the group, get in touch and we can send you some.

Our next meeting takes place on Monday 11th November.

Leeds Business Week

Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013 | Life

As part of Leeds Business Week, the Leeds Toastmasters clubs came together to put on an event “Pitch Perfect”. It turned out to be a huge success with positive feedback from many of our participants and lots of interests in the clubs. Congratulations to Pierre and everyone else involved in bringing it together.

Speakers’ Corner Leeds

Monday, September 30th, 2013 | Religion & Politics

Earlier this year, Leeds got it’s own Speakers’ Corner. Thanks to Elina is now has it’s own website too. If you want to keep up with all the latest updates by subscribing to the mailing list, see the Speakers’ Corner Leeds website. It’s one of the few groups I’m not running lol.

Sheffield Predators at Yorkshire Rams

Sunday, September 22nd, 2013 | Distractions, Photos

What a climatic ending we got for the final game of the season. The Rams needed to win to make the play-offs but all was looking pretty grim at half time when they found themselves 22-0 down.

However, a spectacular reversal in the second half brought them back to 22-20, with only a few minutes left and the ball on the half way line when they were given a 15 yard penalty against the defence. It was like a replay of Super Bowl XLVII from earlier this year.

Sadly, just like the Super Bowl, the defence held, though due more to a valiant effort of the Predators than the clear pass interference of the Baltimore Ravens.
