Forgetting Sarah Marshall film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Jason Segel decides to get over his girlfriend dumping him with a holiday in Hawaii. Only to find out that his ex is also taking a holiday at the same place.

The good: Who doesn’t love Jason Segel? Also, it’s one of your few opportunities to see Mila Kunis, who is just all kinds of levels of lovely.

The bad: Nothing specific, it’s just a bit cliched.

Conclusion: Very watchable romantic comedy, reasonably funny, but never going to be a major award winner. It was OK, I don’t want the two hours of my life back, which is a reasonable sign for a romantic comedy.

Flatliners

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Nelson works out a way to die for a few minutes and then come back to live to see what it’s like. Well, it seems like it’s working that are unforeseen and most scary consequences that soon arrive.

The good: This movie can be really scary if you let it. And poses some interesting questions. Well lit too.

The bad: Would have struggled without Kiefer Sutherland as he is such a cool guy.

Conclusion: I liked it, but it’s not exactly the newest thing on the market and it feels like it. Still, has the power to be pretty scary, though.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Expanding on the game, Aki is a scientist making the last stand against the invading alien race known as the phantoms.

The good: If you like the game it is a great storyline. The animation is excellent.

The bad: If you don’t play the game it won’t interest you that much.

Conclusion: If you are a Final Fantasy fan or like the genre then it’s an enjoyable movie. If it’s not your sort of thing though you will want the last hour or so of your life back.

Elektra film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: As assassin for higher ends up protecting her two targets from “The Hand” who want them dead to sway the balance of power in the world from good to evil.

The good: Jennifer Garner is really, really hot. The action is pretty decent as is the storyline. It had a few little quirks in it.

The bad: The fight scenes could have been better given it was quite a martial arts based movie.

Conclusion: Fairly standard action movie which relies on Jennifer Garner for it’s strength.

Donnie Darko film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Donnie is a schizophrenic who sees a bunny named Frank who tells him he needs to do things like burn down houses and so forth. Why does Donnie do them? Because Frank saved his life. In the future, sort of. Yeah, confusing, you have to watch it.

The good: It will really give you something to think about, mainly trying to figure out what is going on.

The bad: You might struggle to get your head round it, the director’s cut is disappointing.

Conclusion: A cult classic that just needs time to aquire it’s proper label. Highly recommended.

Dog Soldiers film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: A group of British soldiers are doing operations in Scotland when they run into more trouble than they expected.

The good: It’s British, it’s none Hollywood, almost always a plus. It’s quite a raw film, with plenty of violence and even a nice little story arc.

The bad: While it does have a bit of a story, don’t go here looking for a massive interwinding plot then you won’t find it here. It’s about trying to survive werewolves in a survival horror situation which is great but if you are looking for anything deeper, elsewhere.

Conclusion: If you liked Resident Evil, you will like this. It’s a great survival horror piece which hasn’t been glitzed up.

The Da Vinci Code film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Historian Robert Langdon finds himself in the middle of an ancient war between factions of the Christian church trying to destroy and protect the bloodline of Jesus Christ.

The good: I love a good conspiracy and there is some quite interesting ideas and plenty of action. It kept my interest throughout.

The bad: It’s a long film and I am very dubious about a lot of things the film says although that doesn’t really detract from the film itself. I wasn’t over impressed by the ending.

Conclusion: It’s a bit far-fetched and misses out a lot of the good detail in the middle from the book but otherwise an enjoyable film.

The Craft film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Sarah arrives at a new school and soon finds herself falling in with three other girls and their coven. They soon find out they can do magic but it all starts to go down hill, especially when Sarah wants to leave.

The good: It’s a good solid witchcraft movie, the girls are hot, it’s got that cult film feeling about it.

The bad: No massive criticisms but then again, it’s not like I thought “wow this is the greatest movie ever.”

Conclusion: Cool movie.

Coyote Ugly film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Violet moves to New York to make it as a song writer but ends up working at the famous Coyote Ugly bar to get by.

The good: Hot girls dancing on a bar. Has some good bits.

The bad: Bit sappy, a bit unrealistic, I dunno, it just didn’t grab me.

Conclusion: Not a bad movie but you really don’t need to wonder if you missed something great if you never see it.

Clerks II film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Dante and Randal are back, this time working at the fictional fast food restaurant Mooby’s after the Quick Stop burns down.

The good: Some quality Kevin Smith humour is in there to find.

The bad: The humour is a little too crude this time.

Conclusion: When Kevin Smith first brought us Clerks it was a masterpiece. Clerks II seems to have lost it a bit. It’s a glossy full colour movie which doesn’t quite have the same edge the first one did.
