The good, the bad and the luminous

May 19th, 2008 | Friends, Thoughts

Ever get the feeling you sometimes made bad choices in who you befriended?

Fuck off and die like what matts parents did and what he should do aswell.

Claire. 18 May 2008, 03:22.

I’ll take that as a no, you don’t want to be friends again.

The usual tale

May 19th, 2008 | Events, Life

Saturday night was Wendy House’s 10th birthday so having enjoyed some rather nice steak at Maths Chris’s BBQ we did some drinking at Circle Party Central then headed down for some old fashioned Wendy-based fun.

With it being 10 years of Wendy and all they had laid on a special extra room for it. So like the old people we are, we just went to Stylus and spend the entire night there like normal :D. Never the less it was an excellent night – we got there fairly early, as in, before 11 which is fairly unusual for Circle trips to Wendy and didn’t leave till the end (except for a few rubbish losers and Norm).

It was good to hang out with people who aren’t particuarly new faces but people who haven’t really been out at Circle clubbing events before. Indeed, it almost felt like an A-Soc committee meeting in parts with myself, Norm, Nicola, Rosie and Liz as well as ex-social secretary Sarann all in attendance.

Unfortunately because Nicola didn’t make it to the pre-party she wasn’t able to bring my princess costume so I wasn’t able to join in with that one – what a shame huh? :p.

GrandCentral

May 19th, 2008 | Tech

If you haven’t heard about Grand Central (I hadn’t) it is a telecommunications service bought out by Google last year which basically helps you manage your phone calls. The basic idea is that you register with Grand Central and you get one phone number that you can give out and you never need to give out another.

So for example, and to be honest I am somewhat just guessing based on what I have read, but you get a number from Grand Central and give that out. Then when you get a new phone and end up with a whole new number (because for some reason most people don’t port their numbers like us sensible people do) they just put their new number into Grand Central and people and because everyone else uses their Grand Central number they won’t know a difference.

Notably this would be really useful for me though as currently I have two phones, one on Vodaphone and one on o2. This is ok but it means I have to have two numbers which means distributing two numbers. Using Grand Central I could give out my new number and when someone called it it would ring both my phones.

It also offers a number of other cool features including listening in to voicemail being recorded, recording of calls (both parties are notified to comply with privacy laws), voicemail notifications by email, have different callers put through to different phones and the ability to switch phones in the middle of call (battery running out – switch to your landline).

It’s currently in beta and only available in the United States but looks very interesting. Have a read on their website if you want to know more.

Graduation and end of year events

May 18th, 2008 | Events

Because I don’t really feel I have linked it enough, I’ve posted a calendar of all the graduation and end of year events connected with The Circle so that everyone knows what is going on. Which is something almost every night and when there isn’t something on that will probably mean we’re just in The Old Bar. Anyway, you can find the calendar here.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The calendar, and link, have now been removed.

May 15th, 2008 | Distractions, Thoughts

I don’t mean to be picky but on Futurama Bender is made of…

  • 40% titanium
  • 40% zinc
  • 40% dolomite
  • 30% iron

Summer sun

May 11th, 2008 | Life, Thoughts

I love the UK.

It’s the only country in the world that can spend almost the entire year moaning about how bad the weather is then as soon as we finally get some sun people are like “awww, it’s too hot.”

To be fair though, it really is too hot to sleep. And I have an exam tomorrow! I need sort of air conditioned server room next year I think.

My inbox is empty!

Awwww yeah.

For the first time, like, ever, my inbox is empty. Totally empty. This is a historic day.

Things I’ll miss

May 9th, 2008 | Thoughts

With us planning to move into a professional let next year, I think I’ll miss the querks of a student house. After all next year we will have…

  • Front doors that stays open when you open it so you can carry things in
  • Streets that aren’t lined top to bottom with cars 90% of the time
  • Streets you don’t need a four wheel drive to safely navigate over the potholes
  • Hallways you don’t have to swim through due to the amount of leaflets put through the door
  • Door handles that you can twist without having to push it back together first
  • Bathrooms that don’t randomly have woodlice appear in
  • Kitchens that don’t randomly have slugs appear in
  • Kitchen taps that release water when you turn them on rather than within about 5 minutes of turning them on
  • Kitchen floors that you stop sticking to once you’ve cleaned them
  • Washing machines that don’t randomly stop working and randomly start working again later
  • Ovens that light when you turn them on
  • Microwaves that turn on when you try to put them on for less than 2 minutes
  • Irons that allow to entire your entire item of clothing rather than the bit within a foot of the plug socket
  • Telephone lines that were installed within the past 200 years and so can actually carry a signal
  • Surfaces that you can clean the dust off and come back to an hour later without discovering they are once again covered in dust

Then again, maybe not.

They see me rollin’

May 7th, 2008 | Life

Having hatched a plot while drinking in The Old Bar on Monday night, myself and Mr. O’Shea arrived at 9:30am Friday morning in LT17, the lecture theatre in which we were due to have our last ever lecture, and indeed, our lecturer, Dr. Nick Efford’s last lecture in SoC also. With such an occasion we obviously had to go out in style.

Soon we had concealed within the desks at the front a laptop and a pair of travel speakers set to run a scheduled task and play an MP3 at 10:25, midway through the lecture. I’m sure you can guess which certain MP3 that was :D. The plan went off without a hitch. Now if only we can find a way to get that live band in for next time…

Movie night

May 6th, 2008 | Distractions, Events

Given how much money I have spent on my sound system and how much money I have spent on my projector, it seems only sensible that we make as much use out of the home cinema setup that we have as humanly possible.

And so, to take a break from revision I threw together a movie night on Monday. Despite some people replying to the invite as attending and then not turning up (mostly Kieran, it really annoys me when people do that but I did enjoy the bitter sense of irony :p), we actually had a packed lounge – myself, Nicola, Kerry, Sarann, Michelle, Brett, B and Maths Chris. Of course, what we really need to do now is install cinema seating :D. Never the less it was a really good night and I hope enjoyed by all who attended.
