Debate prep meeting
Last night saw us hold a fairly informal debate prep meeting ahead of the upcoming debate with the Islamic soiciety later this month. They are bringing in an external speaker so we thought it best if we gathered our heads together a bit.
Despite our actual speaker for the debate not turning up we got a few good ideas down though a lot of it just needs a bit more research really. Never the less it should be a debate that is going to be very interesting indeed.
Good days and bad days
Yesterday saw us repeat a debate we ran at Atheist Society last year, “do the benefits of religion outweigh the negatives.” Initially we had five people volunteer to speak but three of them having pulled out at the last minute, myself and Nicola ended up arguing for the oppisition.
We won, and while this is to be expected I thought it would have been a closer debate given we were just winging it. Perhaps it is just too much of an easy argument to win? Though I did have an idea of what I wanted to say, having argued for the opposition last year.
Afterwards we headed down to OK Karaoke were it was indeed free entry – but there wasn’t any karaoke. I mean seriously, what karaoke bar doesn’t offer karaoke? At least, you would think that is the kind of thing they would have mentioned to Sophie when she spoke to them on the phone. They did however mention drinks offers, to which there weren’t any.
So we prompted stormed out and headed to Courtyard for a drink or two. Unfortunately Courtyard being dead as normal, decided to close at ten so we were only there for less than an hour. So all in all a bit of bust, but we’re still smiling so it’s all good.
The day Britian stood still
Sunday, it snowed. It snowed quite a lot.
Monday, it snowed. That is quite a lot of snow, for us.
I gather the south had it even worse though to be honest, I think this is much of a case of it snows every year in Britain, why aren’t we prepared for it?
Not that I think we were overly unprepared for it up in Leeds, it remains to be seen as to whether we will get a second downfall that will really cripple us but on the whole things managed to keep moving, everyone in our office managed to make it in despite several of them living in the middle of nowhere.
For anyone in urban areas there was no real reason why those who live and work up north could not get to work on Monday. And given the roads were entirely clear by Tuesday there is certainly no reason why anyone would skip work by then.
Mission Week
Is it really that time of year again?
This week is the Christian Union’s Mission Week and so as part of it we had an A-Soc trip down to see David Hamilton, former terrorist from Nothern Ireland, deliver a talk.
I found it a good chance to catch up with CU male president Joel, having already seen the talk before, though those that had not seen it before were on the whole fairly angered by it lol. The feeling was that the talk basically said it’s ok to be a terrorist because Jesus will forgive you.
Never the less I had fun and it was good to see quite a few people I haven’t seen in a while, even if I don’t know a lot of the upper echelons of the CU anymore.
Aagrah
Sunday saw us head to Aagrah in Garforth for a bit of Indian cuisine (or far more likely, a bit of Anglo-Indian cuisine lol). The food was quite nice though nothing special I thought but then it wasn’t overly pricey either.
Afterwards we headed over to KFC for dessert and it turns out the Avalanche is actually really, really nice. And at like a £1 you can’t really go wrong.
Saturday night’s alright
Having turned up for an exciting shift at work on Saturday, I had heard rumours that we were in for a fun night. The manager of which was being brought in because we’ve basically run out and she doesn’t enjoy the friendliest reputation shall we say 😀 .
Six hours later and no less than three people had walked off shift. Three people! In one night. Needless to say, that slowed us down a bit.
It being absolutely freezing we even skipped the now traditional post close drinks. Still, at least I got to bed at some kind of reasonable time.
AHS website goes live
Finally finally got the resources from across the country, the corporate image guidelines and all the documents and other required materials, the website for the National Federation of Atheist, Humanist and Secular Student Societies, better known as the AHS has now gone live.
Over the coming months there will be lots more content added to the site as we get it, but for the moment it will serve it’s purpose as giving us an official web presence and make available the important information.
Looking forward to the press launch now, it’s only a few weeks away!
Perspective launches
Friday saw the launch of Perspective, a course I developed and by developed I mean came up with the name and handed the work on to Nicola to do. Good times. The basic idea is that each week a different religion comes down to tell us about what they actually believe and everyone can ask questions, over a free dinner of course. Nothing original but highly successful, we got 20 people down on a Friday night for the Baha’i session.
