Windows to Linux migration

Sunday, October 30th, 2005 | Life

Now that I am using 21 GB a month on my 20 GB Windows hosting account I needed a solution to cut down. The obvious, and pretty much only good solution there was, was to move some of my sites over to my Linux account. Problem is that all the bandwidth eaters still left on Windows are all coded in ASP.

I started off my moving StevenSpielberg.co.uk which was a reasonably easy move as it basically had no ASP code in that did anything. So I just stripped out the top of the page tags and such and changed it to PHP include header and footer files and did some Apache mod_rewrite’ing to make the URLs backward compatible.

Lyrics Burger has been more of a challenge though considering that it is coded in ASP totally – there is loads of the stuff. So I have spent the last few hours re-coding it all in PHP. I’m moving the DNS now and hopefully it will all work when it’s done. On the plus side the testing got me to add a new albums worth of lyrics, Demon Days by Gorillaz.

I considered The Chili!Soft ASP thing but I didn’t really understand it. When you went to price and buy you could get a media kit for for $20 or some upgrade pack for $200. The media kit must be it as nothing else made sense but $20? When there is some upgrade thing for $200? Nothing was expained, the Sun website really is poor.

Climate change

Saturday, October 29th, 2005 | Life

One thing I have noticed is that the term “global warming” has for the most part been replaced in material by “climate change” which I think is due to the fact that global warming means little to most people whereas climate change is nice and simple. Or it could just be me splitting hairs.

3 days to go

Saturday, October 29th, 2005 | Life

3 days until I see Millencolin! Also Flogging Molly and I am hoping the “guests” will be Green Day. Ok that’s a little hopeful ;). But yeah, two awesome bands, it works out at like £7.50 each, slightly less, you cannot go wrong.

Birthday greetings

I’ve just been checking my emails and I already have emails from The OC Show Forums, Buffy-Boards and Web Hosting Chat wishing me happy birthday. vBulletin rocks! 😛

No longer 18

Wednesday, October 26th, 2005 | Life

Not happy. I liked at 18. More than 19 anyway. 19 is just depressing. Oh well, I’m going to do some work on my websites, watch a Family Guy then go to bed. I’m getting up at 7:50 so I have time to shower, eat breakfast and get to uni.

The people

Monday, October 24th, 2005 | Life

So apparently the money will reach my credit card on Wednesday (aka my birthday) so I will be able to get up early that morning and order it. I spoke to my parents yesterday who said my printer hadn’t arrived yet so it looks like that should be arriving today (probably this morning). Not that it makes much of a difference as I won’t get it until Wednesday anyway. That reminds me, I need to buy myself a birthday card.

Haven’t been shopping around for PDA’s as I was planning to though I would still really like one as my life is still messy and I don’t want to start missing deadlines. I know it’s a needless expense but it might stop me buying domains for a week or two ;). Ok, that won’t happen, I bought a new one this morning.

I have good reason though, I checked on AdSense yesterday and noticed that I had earned $44 in the last week. Which is compared to the normal lower side of $10 so I am quite impressed, particuarly with the performance of Erica Planet which is really munching up the bandwidth.

On to my point for the post though. I love the people at uni! It happened against last night – late night debating, it’s brilliant. 1:30 in the morning and we are all sat round having a massive debate about capital punishment.

Things are getting interesting in inter-social policy too. Until now, I had considered interaction between us a line I tried to skirt around and interfere when I needed but I think it may be time to just get stuck in if you know what I mean. You probably don’t and even if you think you do you may well be wrong. But all shall eventually be revealed.

Moving money is slow

Saturday, October 22nd, 2005 | Life

All I want to do is buy a new computer! So a week yesterday (known as the first Friday) I put in an electronic fund transfer as I mentioned on October 17th. Finally found the money on Thursday 23rd resting in my Lloyds TSB account.

I decided I wasn’t waiting for it to be EFT’ed into my HSBC account so I went into down, took the money out in cash and took it over to HSBC. They don’t have cachiers now though so I had to use a paying in envolope. They say they will sort it the same day if you pay it in before 3:30. I paid it in at like 2:30 and it wasn’t.

Now it’s Saturday morning and they have sorted it so I have just phoned them now and they are moving it from my current account to my credit card account so I can finally buy my computer. But that is going to take two working days which takes us to Tuesday-Wednesday (that’s 11-12 days after I started this process)!

My week so far

Thursday, October 20th, 2005 | Life

It’s been a crazy week so far. Monday we went to Bondi Beach Club – £10, free frinks all night (well after 11 apparently but we didn’t arrive until 11:30). The first half an hour was punk rock tracks which was awesome as I was just screaming for like 30 minutes. I got through 5 bottles so that works out at £2 per drink and free entry to a club, not bad at all.

We left at gone 3 and I didn’t get to bed till like 4:20, 4:40, something like that so I was planning to catch up on sleep Tuesday. Didn’t pan out like that, I went down to the Union with Oli with the intention of going to the Tunnel Club (Forward Russia were playing, not that I had heard of them). Tickets were sold out when we got there though so we had a drink in the Old Bar and Oli managed to get a free ticket off someone so I headed back and ending up watching a movie till 1:30.

Finally last night we started in Walkabout but it took me 35 minutes to get a drink so I wasn’t impressed. We then went to Creation (getting free entry which was pretty cool). I didn’t think much to it though, especially after how much Bruce had talked it up. Rachel got so wasted though, Daryll, myself and Laura took her home at 1 mainly because she could no longer walk so by the time we had sorted her out it was 2:30. Still, I can sleep at Christmas.

EFT’s suck

Monday, October 17th, 2005 | Life

I’m not a huge fan of electronic fund transfters. I would go as far as to say they suck. They don’t suck as badly as cheques but still, I put one on Thursday morning I think it was and am waiting on it now. I think they say 3 working days so I am hoping it will arrive tomorrow.

Still though – that’s like 5 days I will have been waiting which is just silly considering I processed it via the internet, the land where you can do everything instantly. Why does it take them so long to process a simple transfer of my money from one account to another.

Once it’s transfered from my savings account to my student account I then need to move it from my student account to my credit card account so I can actually buy my new computer. I’m hoping that won’t take days as in theory I could just draw it out of one account and pay it straight into another. That is, if HSBC actually had any staff which they don’t in most branches – they have customer service people but no clerks in both branches in town which is just crap. I really need to switch to Halifax.

Paper Jesus

Saturday, October 15th, 2005 | Life

Good Staind song. Anyway, as I’m on the site I might as well post something. Where the hell is everyone? I can’t find anyone, it’s like a ghost town which is wierd as there is almost always someone sat around watching TV in the common room.

I’m currently waiting for an electronic fund transfer between my savings account and my current account so I can then make the transfer from my current account to my credit card account. Needlessly complicated but it will result in me buying a new computer which is good a thing. It’s a pretty awesome machine too.

Pentium 4 3 GHz, 1024mb memory, 265mb graphics card, 17″ flat screen monitor, DVD-ROM, DVD-RW, Soundblaster Augiology sound card, it’s going to rock. I’m also going to get a 2.1 speaker system (decided against 5.1 as I don’t watch movies on my computer so I can probably get a better 2.1 for the same price). My total hard drive space will be 410GB once I get a second 250GB hard drive to add to the machine.

I will also be getting a printer which is one thing I have really missed since coming to uni, not being able to quickly print things off. I’m also toying with the idea of getting a PDA as my current organisation is, well, there isn’t much.
