After explaining what I thought in short on the second presidential debate, I introduce the crazy new look of phpMyAdmin…

The Simpsons on Channel 4

October 12th, 2004 | Life

Quick note before I go into my main post – I am currently watching Friends on Channel 4, it is the episode where Joey and Phoebe go for a road trip in the cab and Joey sleeps all the way through the journey and Phoebe tells him to sing as punishment. The song be begins to sing is Rock & Roll All Night by Kiss!

Anyway for the main post – there has been a serious Simpons drout ever since it left BBC2. It was awesome when they started to show it every day at 6 which was like for a year or two which was great for watching it during dinner. But then it disappeared and Sky One was the only source of Simpsons.

As I mentioned in the title though this will not be true forever though. It was last night during Father Ted when I first got the news. Straight after the break for the middle of the show began with a second or two mosaic of Mr Burns and I instantly knew that a new age was dawning with the Simpsons arriving on Channel 4.

Of course this is mainstream television and we don’t have to think – as at the end of the advert break there was SImpons footage and a big stamp saying the Simpsons on Channel 4. So I think generally yay, it is good news!

School Open Evening

October 11th, 2004 | Video

It is now a tradition – every year myself and several others randomly turn up at our school’s open evening armed with a camcorder to see what is going on. This year saw myself go with fellow Nerd Federation authors rawpulse and ceon for some footage including the video I edited together for the schools main presentation. Who knows I may even encode that for Nerd Fed one day. Anyway, check it out:

Domain grabbing assholes

October 11th, 2004 | Life

Though I am well aware of all the problems there are with people
stealing everyone elses domains, last summer when a domain expired that
I was connected to, and it was left to expire without being picked up
my confidence was renewed in the domain registration system. I though,
well sure they are taking up the good domains but at least the rest of
us can rest in peace.

However my confidence has been once again shaken. Upon searching for
another domain which expired last summer which I knew about I found
that, that one had been snapped up by one of these. The assholes behind
this registration had been Kentech, Inc. My problem therefore is what to do with the domains that I am considering I let expire.

Due to my previously renewed faith in the system, I had left two domains slide earlier this month which are currently waiting to be deleted and I fear that these two will now be taken up by the losers who try to profit off stealing others peoples traffic – because that is what you guys do, you are no better than the lawyers that destroy communities by getting everyone to sue each other (obviously the you was aimed at them).

I still have domains I was considering letting slide although the only difference I can see here, is that the first one was a .net whereas this one was a .com. Apart from that the .net was a much superior name but was not taken up. So I am left in quite a situation that I have a feeling is going to damage my bank balance in domain renewals to make sure they are not stolen. I’m not happy.

The Simple Life 2

October 10th, 2004 | Life

Well I’m just watching the first episode of the Simple Life 2 – the show where Paris Hilton (who’s second amatur porn video is soon to be released over the internet if recent break-in’s are anything to go by) and Nicole Richie try to live the simple life without credit cards, money and so forth. Sounds a truly terrible show right? Well I will talk about that later.

So for the simple life 2, they are going for a road trip from Florida to the west coast of America. Using a bright pink truck and a trailer. Other than the format is pretty much the same as the first seriwes with them doing random activites out in the country that they do with their usual less than competent effort.

I guess the question is then, why am I, a fan of QI, Horizon and
Frasier watching this type of show? Well it is more on the humour level
than on an entertainment level. The fact that Paris galloped off on a
horse without learning how to make it stop (even though she has been
riding for like ever) followed by being thrown from the horse. Then,
once she had get up and walked around, she was airlifted on a stretcher
to hispital.

The fact that they don’t know common terminology too makes the show
more comical. It brings me back to the Family Guy series 3 episode
"screwed to the pouch" when they arrive at a toll both and Bill Gates
asks "what’s a quarter?" I shall leave you on that note ;).

Mark’s house floods

October 6th, 2004 | Video

First to set the scene. Myself, Arron and AndyBob were working on editing together a video. When in walks Mark with a question: "how do you stop a house from flooding?" We all of course suggested the obvious, turn the water off but we soon came to our senses – by than I mean that myself and Arron grabbed our video cameras and headed round there.

The following is the pretty much unedited, unsensored video of what happened as witnessed from my camera. With some luck I might be able to get hold of Arron’s video of the events too. But anyway, this video is well worth a watch lol. Just in case there were any doubts about whether water really did run through the walls and if the wall really did fall off.

Well it’s been ages

October 5th, 2004 | Life

I haven’t touched my camera in like a week. I had plenty to blog about if I really wanted to and I even considered doing a written one although that requires effort. For some reason I actually found it this morning though so here it is. Interesting story hu? Well that also and I have little else to do. Actually plenty to do but I don’t want to do any of it so I am trying to push it out of my mind.

Today I will be spending a considerable amount of the day editing together a video for the school’s opening evening. Thanks to their quality time management they told us they wanted to make this video about a week ago, oh and by the way guys, the opening evening is on Wednesday. Although if we can get it done today that leaves us with a whole 24 hours and there is nothing like having time to spare.

As for what else I have been doing recently, there have been a great many things going on in the land of domains. The first and most shocking change is that one of my domains is coming up for renewal – and I am not going to renew it! I’m making a lot of progress according to my sponser. Also Denison 365 expires around today so check it out before it’s gone.

The other thing that I did was to buy a new domain – CassieNet.com. Which although it looks bad is also a step forward. See as I build so many websites, I need domains for them all. So what I decided to do was buy this one, then I could set my new websites up on subdomains of it rather than buying new domains. It has already saved me from buying 2 domains and is also the new home of the one that is expiring.

Google browser, presidential debate

October 1st, 2004 | Life

Well well I was tempted to get my camera out but decided on a good old fashioned written blogs for two reasons. The first is that I dont want to have to walk all the way over to my cupboard to get my camera out. The second and more important though is that I have a lot to talk about which I would just forget once I got in front of the camera.

So Google are thinking about launching a web browser well basically it is all rumours based on a domain registration (gbrower.com) and hiring a bunch of people who used to work on Internet Explorer, Microsofts browser. Although rumour also had it says it will be a Mozilla base with a new skin and bringing the Google features together.

According to Mitch Radcliff this could just be market research though now that the rumour is out they have hundreds of people blogging on the subject and expressing their opinions. Even CNets News.com are writing about it so Google pretty much have all the opinions they need to decide whether its a good idea.

Moving on, last night saw the first of three debates between George Bush and John Kerry. Due to the time difference it was on at 2 am here so I videoed it and watched it back along with Ceon this afternoon. It was quite entertaining although I didnt watch through all the spin put on it after the debate.

This leads me onto my next subject however, that while it was on myself and Ceon did a running commentarwwwy over the top of it for Maze Radio of which now has two new shows available to listen online to so check that out.

Long running projects

September 29th, 2004 | Life

Though most of the posts here on Nerd Federation have now moved over to video blog entries there is the blind spot in the plan of being able to record video while out studying or at least pretending to as I don’t tend to take my camera with me (although its far from unknown for me). This is really one of the posts, designed to fill the void of time before I can get back home to grab my camera.

Today’s post, or at least this post has a central theme of long running projects – projects you start and rather than going crazy and working loads you start of slowly and work on it for a long time. There are several projects, which I have set in motion over the years designed to do this.

The original of these would probably have to be my magazine. Though it got a little delayed over summer (surprisingly considering I did nothing all summer) it’s not slowly coming back into a more regular pattern.

I have loads of websites also designed to do this. Maze Star is just getting started as a content site publishing at least once per day and there are many websites that I have moved more into regular content maintenance then building new ones.

I have also been searching for more, shall we say, well I’m not sure what the word is exactly. Like passive only it’s not. Anyway something like a game. My original target for this was Warhammer Online although that fell flat on it’s face and was abandoned about a month before it was due out. BBCi’s Celebdaq looks promising though.

What is the point of a long-term project that eats up your life constantly rather than just a solid two weeks? Well it probably offers more constant gratification although I think the main advantage is it isn’t just going to die after the initial period is over, if it’s done right it should keep going for a long time.

Instant messaging vs email

Instant messaging is never going to replace email, here are my short throughts on why.
