The fine line between nuns and hookers

Saturday, September 20th, 2008 | Religion & Politics

With new legislation having been introduced in Italy to limit what prostitutes can do or wear on the streets, they have come up with a rather interesting solution.

The Telegraph reports that they are taking to dressing as nuns so the police cannot arrest them for wearing “unseemly and indecent clothing.”

Pia Covre, from the Committee for the Rights of Prostitutes, told the Corriere della Sera newspaper “the idea of wearing gowns or habits down to the feet is to confront the decrees which limit even the freedom of what you can wear.”

More censorship at LUU

Saturday, September 20th, 2008 | Religion & Politics

One thing I think is worth commenting on is the situation regarding Leeds Unviersity Union when el presidente Norman submitted some events to the events calendar for Atheist Society.

You see, apparently, they turned us down. Apparently, events such as “make your own god” may reflect badly on the union. Whereas I guess, they have already taken the abuse for censoring anyone connected with the union resulting in at least one front page of Leeds Student.

This is a clear freedom of speech invasion with no real reason, the event is not in any way negative (it’s a fun craft day) and does not target one specific religion. This will certainly be added to our ongoing discrimination complaint which the union have apparently buried as the new societies officer has never heard of it.

International Freshers’ Fair

Saturday, September 20th, 2008 | Events

Yesterday was International Freshers’ Fair, a chance for international students to find out about the societies at LUU. It was quite busy, much better than last year and as usual we had an interesting placement. We had ISoc to our left and the CU just down from them. Plus the Irish Society were on the same table and apparently asked to be moved!

Our banners seemed to work well, they were the tallest their (with ISoc just coming in behind us) and we did very well for representation – we had 7 of us there, 5 of which were in t-shirts or hoodies so I think we had the best coordination going.

Double take

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008 | Friends, Life

While at the White Rose as explained previously I always ensure I pop my head round to take a look at the food court’s D to see if I can spot anyone as I know a few of the managers there.

As usual, I was disappointed to see a lack of recognisable faces and so turned away until, what the computer scientist in me would probably want to call echoic memory (I realise it’s not actually from computer science but we cover it in HCI) kicked in and at second glace I spotted Gary running kitchen!

Of course, this won’t mean anything to you as none of the right people read my blog for this to be of any significance. But there you have it. We all miss Gary. He was a legend. And fantastic if you got talking about cars, plus actually has some real money so rather than driving around in a crappy little one litre Cosrsa he now powers around in a Mondeo ST. Living the dream people, living the dream.

One good curry

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008 | Life

Glyn having gotten chips and curry sauce for lunch today set me on a mission to go find a curry for lunch.

I was going to see what Co-op had to offer but Matt having never been to the White Rose suggested we take a trip there and so we headed in to see if anywhere in the food court offered such a meal and as it happened, several places did.

I ended up getting chicken tikka and chips from the Asian food place. What I got, I was highly impressed with. Not only was it still fairly warm when I got it back to the office (I drove back so technically I got a tikka to ride 😉 ) but it was very nice indeed, having spent the last several years eating at student takeaways you really appreciate the difference when you enter the real world. Good stuff, recommended.

George is just a number

The final A-Soc social of the summer ended on a rather good note with 17 people turning up. We were yet again screwed over by the union but never the less things proceeded well with us re-grouping in The Old Bar for a night of good fun that didn’t end until gone midnight.

Especially given Nicola and Zoltan were at a gig, Moz is in Europe, Rich is missing in action, Bo was on a date, Gijsbert has just disappeared, Brett couldn’t make it down, Rosie is in America Bevis couldn’t make it either. These are just A-Soc hardcores if you also add people like Oli, Chinese Matt and Charlie we did fantastically to say so many people weren’t there.

Roll on freshers’ week!

One hundred videos

Monday, September 15th, 2008 | News

Yesterday I uploaded my 100th video to YouTube.

This excludes the material uploaded as part of Worfolk Pictures so I don’t think that is too bad going. It is a right random collection though, there are series of videos from anything from tech to celebs all with atheist rants mixed in with them.

Masquerade

Sunday, September 14th, 2008 | Events, Friends, Life

Saturday night having come round again, Michelle and Norm’s joint party (that Norm didn’t have any say in and couldn’t actually come to 😉 ) had arrived.

Being unable to get the time off work I didn’t finish until late and given an unending series of problems ending with the building alarm refusing to set leaving us waiting around for the morning shift to turn up I didn’t make it to the party until gone 3am.

I was greeted by a rather drunk Moz who seemed rather pleased to see me. As pre-arranged with Nicola (who was passed out on the couch) I tried to take her up but she was a little too drunk to stay conscious for more than 20-30 seconds at a time. For someone who is such an outgoing party animal she’s quite a light weight (though to be fair she had, had a long day and is keeping up with me for hours at work at the moment).

The real winner of the evening was the amount of drunken stories that emerged that night and the next morning. Always entertaining.

Norm had sex. With a man.

Apparently.

I missed much of the drunken conversation last night but apparently Norm’s response when they started playing Ring of Fire was “last time I played this I ended up having sex with a man.” Sarann is a fantastic resource for remembering such comments.
