psoTFX leaves phpBB

Wednesday, September 14th, 2005 | Life

Well if phpBB 3 was taking a long time before I think it’s going to take significantly longer now. Paul, aka, psoTFX who was co-manager of phpBB has left the project and I don’t blame him the amount of abuse that has been thrown at the project at recent times.

Still, it’s a shame he had to leave as phpBB 3 could draw in some real attention once it’s released. vBulletin really does rock but the next version of phpBB won’t be far behind.

Ordering stuff

Monday, September 12th, 2005 | Life

Just watching the new series of Jack Dee Live at the Apollo. Lee Mac was the guest presenter tonight but the thing is, Jack Dee is so good that the guest presenters are never as good by comparison.

Anyway, I finally got round to ordering some new network stuff to uni. Well ok, it started out that I needed to buy a new surgemaster multi-socket dealie (which I went for the 2 metre one instead of the 1 metre one, crazy I know 😉 but ended up getting two network cables (I needed a decent one to give my laptop some room and another for connecting my new computer up, extending my router range etc).

I also got some network couplings (things to connect two network cables together, pretty useful and at £0.56 or something you can’t go wrong, I ordered 3) even with all that stuff, the shipping still made up like 30% of my total order cost. I should really start shopping else where but what you going to do.

1and1 are a joke of a company

Monday, September 12th, 2005 | Life

So I’ve been trying to cancel my domain name with 1&1 (I reged it last year with the free .info domains) and they want me to fax them some kind of contract through. Which would be great if I had a fax machine. But I don’t as some of us are living in the 21st century. PayPal asked me to fax them a while ago too. Move on people, we don’t have fax machines anymore!

They are so slack though. I emailed them days ago and it takes them until now to get back to me. Can you imagine if you got a notice from GoDaddy saying, “oh we’re closed for the weekend.” Further more they tell me I need to do something totally different to what the website FAQs said. Why 1and1 has been such a successful company I will never know.

Actually I will, £50 a month for 10GB of bandwidth or thereabouts as their servers used it be. I pay around £25 for my VPS and I get 150GB of bandwidth and that isn’t particuarly cheap. No wonder they are rolling in it if they charge that much and have so few support staff to pay.

Horizon title sequence

Monday, September 12th, 2005 | Life

Why do Horizon come up with some crazy title sequence each series? The good old black with burning letters thing is classic, they need to stop messing with it. I’ve just started watching the new series, “Naming The Dead” as I think I was watching Dispatches or at least something on Channel 4 when it was on.

Shopping for uni stuff

Sunday, September 11th, 2005 | Life

Went to Argos today to stock up on crap for uni. Really random items – bedding, lamps (well ok lamp), plastic container things so I can microwave everything, bags, etc. I also just went to random peoples houses and asked them for stuff ;). Ok my gran’s, she’s great.

She said she had this can opener for me, I was thinking it would just have this simple thing for me. It’s huge and has like four different blades on it, some of them look like the kind of size teeth you get on those industrial crushers at the tip :D. This is a week or so after a nail clipper, mini-blade and scissors. For someone so sweet she sure has a lot of blades ;).

Ok, seriously though where is all this crap going to go? I have to store it in my room for a week which is full enough and my new room will probably fit into my current room several times over. Who needs floor space though? After all I first wanted to get a double bed into the room.

My real worry is internet access as apparently I need to go onto the campus to get my network password. I REALLY don’t want to have to log on each time I want to use the internet as that is shit, if I do, I will look for a way to get round it. I am hoping it’s like my cable internet, just register my machine and I’m sorted.

Although even if I don’t I still have to go onto the campus so I should be able to do everything I need from home Sunday morning and at the latest by online in the halls by Monday night. Otherwise I may be coming home sooner than I thought :P.

Spacerace

Heads up, BBC2’s new series Spacerace finally starts on Wednesday at 9 pm.

DVD Shopping

Saturday, September 10th, 2005 | Life

I know as a student I should stop spending a crazy-ass amount of money on pointless crap but it’s not going to be easy. I mean, they give me my own postal address for deliveries and a student bank account with £1,000 overdraft – that’s just asking for trouble!

I’m tempted to get a DVD to celebrate my transition into uni. After all, everyone feels down and homesick when they first move out and my comfort is DVDs. Well Dawson’s Creek to be exact but I have the first 5 series and series 6 isn’t available yet.

So I’m thinking about buying a DVD after I have re-assessed my financial situation (if I realise I have plenty or very little then I’m going to pass but if I have just enough then I see it as my last spending spree before I become a pennyless student :P) although that means that I have to pick one, always a difficult decision. I used to keep a huge list of DVDs I wanted but I got rid of it to remove the temptation ;).

I don’t have a shopping problem! Just thought I would clear anything up about that. Ok, I may have a problem buying domains. But I keep it managable. I may not need them but I can afford them. Anyway, I don’t have to justify myself to you! Leave me alone dammit.

Ok, so back on track. I’m toying with which ones to get based on what is on sale on Play and, also, to a lower extent, what I actually want ;). My ideas include:

  • X-Files series 1 (£27)
  • OC series 1 (£31)
  • OC series 2 (£33)
  • Fraiser series 4 (£25)
  • Everybody Loves Raymond series 2 (£18)
  • Charmed series 1(£45)
  • Red Dwarf series 2 (£13)
  • So Little Time volume 4 (£10)

Those are just some ideas. Actually, some of them, particularly anything like £45 is more wish list than possible list. But hey, I have a birthday coming up. I might add a Sopranos series to the list or finish off my Father Ted collection. Though I’m really tempted by The O.C. boxsets. What can I say, I love teen dramas.

Jack Dee

Friday, September 9th, 2005 | Life

Just watching Friday Night’s with Jonathon Ross. Well actually I’ve turned over for Bromwell High but I’m not between the two. His first guest was Jack Dee, great guy. He was talking about holidays with Jonathon. The quote was something like this (maybe added bits to explain it).

Jack: “People say, you know, ‘did you go anywhere nice?’ Well yeah – course I did. … Spent a week at a sewage works”

One Tree Hill slumber party

Thursday, September 8th, 2005 | Life

Just watching the slumber party episode of One Tree Hill. It just decended into the four girls having a pillow fight in their underwear. I mean, come on, give us a little credit. Although it did have Sum 41 – No Reason playing so props for that.

No sex we’re teenagers

Tuesday, September 6th, 2005 | Life

Just watching this series on BBC2. A pastor in the US is saying why date and have sex if you’re not willing to get married. Because marriage is basically the top step (he made a staircase an anallargy, I don’t know how to spell that). My question is: why does a relationship have to end in marriage? They claim the whole sex and alchol attitude needs to be changed, I think the idea that a relationship has to end in marriage needs to be changed. Yeah, think about it.
