One of my websites that definitely has not been getting enough love over the years is Star Trek: Random Sector. It was really old. It used out-dated hover-over drop-down menus, tags that nobody knew still existed and had no way of easily updating the site.

That is a shame because there is a lot of super detailed content on there, especially round the episode guides.

No longer though is it a relic though! The site has been re-built from the ground up. All the URLs have been replaced by cleaner ones. The spelling mistakes have been corrected. The dead links removed. And best of all, it now works great on mobile as well. On top of that, there is even some new content. Happy days for Trekkers.

It was only last Wednesday when I sat in a Toastmasters meeting and listened to a speech about Spock. Little did we know that less than 48 hours later his illness would take a turn for the worse.

It only seems fitting to remember him the way I am sure he would want to be remembered…

I saw Lawrence Krauss speaking at QED last year and decided he was definitely worth reading. When I looked up his books, I found he has one entitled “The Physics of Star Trek”. Win.

It is pretty much what you expect. He looks at various aspects of the technology featured in Star Trek and talks about how possible they would be in the real world. It turns out that Gene Roddenberry put quite a lot of thought into this, especially as Trekkers kept asking difficult questions.

It was written in 1995 and is now starting to show its age. It was, for example, written well before we successfully build a cloaking device. Krauss writes in an engaging style that is on my wavelength.

Maybe there will one day be a sequel. As the author himself suggests, he could do The Physics of Star Trek 2: Wrath of Krauss.

Obviously the new Star Trek films completely ruin everything with their inaccurate depiction of events (you know, when they really happened in the original films). But that being said, I did rather enjoy the new movie.

I had no problems accepting Benedict Cumberbatch. I struggle with Doctor Whos in other things, but for some reason he isn’t set in my mind as Sherlock. Or maybe I was so distracted thinking about how he looks almost identical to Keanu Reeves playing Neo in The Matrix. That was annoying.

I was also very close to jumping up and screaming “KHAN!!!!!!!!!!” at the appropriate point.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the British girl, who seemed more like she had been added to bring another pair of tits than a deep and meaningful character and it was a bit shallow at times – Admiral Marcus was a bit too much of a stereotypical evil villain.

Ultimately though, any film with a tribble in is going to warm your heart.

On Saturday we were faced with a very difficult choice. Sit in and continue to enjoy the epic ride that was Film4’s Star Trek marathon – the first ten Star Trek films (I refuse to say the original ten because how was Star Trek 11 not an “original” film – it didn’t make any sense but I don’t see how that makes it unoriginal) or drag ourselves out for an evening of drinking and revelry at Wendy House.

Despite it meaning a clash with Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home and Star Trek 5: The Undiscovered Country we decided to brave it, especially when people just started turning up at our apartment in preparation. In the end we managed a rather impressive turn out of 23 people in our group, presumably as some kind of show of solidarity that if one of us would miss that future saving whale, we all should.
