Back to lectures

Monday, January 23rd, 2006 | Life

I’ve had a long day today. I got to bed at midnight last night as I needed to be up at 8:45 for breakfast but I couldn’t get to sleep until like 2:30. Got into uni for 10 and had stuff through till 4. Though we need have a nice long lunch break. Myself, Graham, Sarann, Michelle and Jimmy spent most of it sitting round discussing various issues in Game On.

After uni was done I meet up with Fonze, Deni and Carl for some pool. Fonze won more games than anyone I think, mainly because in the whole of the nights activities I prematurely potted the black three times. We did that till about 6 then went to get some food and Deni and Carl went home.

After food me and Fonze headed back and played yet more pool :p. Pool is fun. I really want a pool table. Also tomorrow I don’t have to be in until 1 pm which is awesome as last semester it was between 9 and 11 starts everday. Databases seems an ok new module, as does algorithms and data structures plus the SE12 project will be cool as me and Michelle got our partners to agree to work together so we can work together and we can do anything pretty much as long as it’s written in Python.

I’m not sure I’m going to buy any of the recommended text books this semester. I won’t say I didn’t get use out of the £200 I spent on text books last semester but I didn’t feel like I got my money’s worth. Still I might go get one for learning Python as I’m hoping I know a good one (I have one for PHP which is good and I think they do a Python one but I’m not 100%).

Google as a domain registrar

Nick Wilsdon has written an interesting article on what Google could be doing as a domain registrar, you can read it here.

Animated favicons

Sunday, January 22nd, 2006 | Life

So apparently your favicon doesn’t have to be an icon. I should have seen that really but then I don’t know if it’s just something that browsers support or whether it’s a standard or what. But RadioTimes.com have an animated gif as their favicon which is cool. It will get annoying soon but cool. Anyway, the code…

<link rel=”icon” href=”http://www.radiotimes.com/favicon.gif” type=”image/gif” />

Simple enough. Just the regular code (although I would rel it as a shortcut icon) but with a type attribute as well.

BTW, what’s the deal with WordPress’s code tag? It doesn’t seem to do anything.

Awesome slogan

I just saw one of the best techie slogans ever…

If it aint broke, fix it until it is

The Wendy House is wicked

Sunday, January 22nd, 2006 | Life

I finally made it to The Wendy House which is the alternative night (and by that they mean goth night) at the union. It was just me and Michelle as Sarann bailed on us because she’s a hardcore wuss ;). They have it laid out like Fruity using Stylus, Bar Coda and Mine. As usual, the indie rock got stuck in Bar Coda but ah well, the music in Stylus was decent enough.

Great night though, there are so many hot goth chicks and we spent most of the night playing spot the wierdest outfit you can. There were some quality condendors, it’s worth going just to see what people are wearing :p. It’s also good as it’s not that busy so there is plenty of room to dance unlike Fruity when it’s just too packed to move anywhere other than Bar Coda (one of the advantages of being an indie fan is that most people aren’t so you can usually get cheap drinks quickly and have room to dance).

The Wendy House

Saturday, January 21st, 2006 | Life

The Wendy House is the monthly goth event at the union. I was reading their website and I came accross this…

NOTES: We operate Strobes, flashing lights and there’s also smoke. For your safety, the venue currently is running a policy of random searches. Right of Admission is Reserved. The University will not allow Nazi insignia on the premesis.

The University will not allow Nazi insignia on the premesis.” So are these guys saying that if it was up to them, they would?

Up goes my inbox count

Saturday, January 21st, 2006 | Life

My inbox count is creeping back up again. It went as high as 25 today although I’ve managed to get it back down to 19 now.

Sundance Film Festival

Saturday, January 21st, 2006 | Life

Isn’t a bit bullshit when major Hollywood stars like Jennifer Aniston are starring in films at the flagship festival for “independent movie making,” it just doesn’t really seem to be in the spirit of things.

Teen People quiz

Saturday, January 21st, 2006 | Life

I took the friendship quiz in the February issue of Teen People and scored 11 / 21 (I’m not going to explain why I have a copy of Teen People but those of you familiar with xmeltrut.com should be able to work out why).

That puts me in the bottom 7-11 points category “where is the love” (it’s worth noting that 7 is the minimum points you can score). This is what is says about me…

The way you are threating your friends, it’s hard to believe you have any left. Try considering other people’s feelings and showing graditude.

I think that sums me up nicely :p. Ok, I’m going to be honest, I’m not that guy. I wish I was, if I could change my personality I would probably me more ruthless and more strong-willed. But considering the quiz asks questions about cheerleading and friends talking about getting dumped I think it’s only accurate for girls or camp guys anyway.

Adventures with FreePay

Friday, January 20th, 2006 | Life

A friend of mine has apparently got his free PSP on the way to him from FreePay (it used to be called Gratis network). I somehow got myself signed up to the Free Ipods site and I’ve completed an offer although I found one that was free, I’m not going to invest money in it as then to make it worth it I will have to invest more to make sure I get it.

Bottom line is, I know it’s legit as all the news sources like CNN and Wired have been talking about it but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a scam. it’s still a pyramid scheme where most people don’t end up with anything. But we’ll see how it goes.
