Road Trip film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: When Josh accidentally mails a tape of him with another girl to his long distance girlfriend, four friends set out on a road trip to get it back before she sees it.

The good: Very, very funny.

The bad: Typical teen humour, going even further than American Pie to the point some people may just walk out in disgust.

Conclusion: If you liked American Pie you absolutely have to see this movie. If you thought American Pie was crude and unfunny you will want these 90 minutes of your life back.

Resident Evil: Extinction film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: The T Virus has escaped and now it’s the end of the world – zombies have taken over the planet, the whole world has been turned into desert and the only survivors are either people on the run, or Umbrella executives sat in their underground labs.

The good: It’s never a bad thing to see Milla Jovovich’s face.

The bad: All you really get to see is Milla Jovovich’s face. Also not a great deal happens.

Conclusion: If you like the franchise, it is an OK sequel, otherwise it’s a pretty poor effort. Literally, nothing happens.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: A small group of survivors led by Alice from the first movie attempt to escape the confines of Racoon City before the Umbrella Corporation clears up it’s mess.

The good: Lots of zombies, some kick ass action, lictors.

The bad: A bit wider than the original and so a little less focused on the surival horror than the first. Terrible, terrible ending.

Conclusion: It’s a great movie but what happens at the ending really drags it down. Luckily it’s not the very end which doesn’t finish too badly so you won’t feel like you wasted your time, it’s just it’s not as good as it could have been.

Resident Evil film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: When the computer of a secret underground facility goes homicidal a team go in to investigate. What they find is that the staff are not as dead as they first appeared.

The good: It’s probably the first zombie move to put a really good explanation behind why zombies are suddenly walking around trying to suck people’s blood.

The bad: Very little.

Conclusion: As zombie movies go, this is one hell of a movie.

Rat Race film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: An eccentric casino owner challenges a group of people to a race across America – the first one there gets $2,000,000 cash.

The good: Fantastic cast including Rowan Atkinson, Breckin Meyer (Josh from Road Trip), Cuba Gooding Jr., Whoopi Goldberg, Seth Green and John Cleese. Very funny.

The bad: While it is a funny comedy, it’s a fairly standard Hollywood comedy layout, there isn’t much original here. Lots of bad science too.

Conclusion: It is worth a watch just because of the amount of great people in the firm. You aren’t missing anything if you don’t see it though.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Action packed piratey adventure. Captain Jack Sparrow tries to recover his lost ship, The Black Pearl, that was taken from him in a mutiny, while the mutineers try and rid themselves of a curse.

The good: Great action movie, doesn’t take itself too seriously, Johnny Depp is brilliant.

The bad: Keira Knightley is, at minimum, partially clothed through the entire film.

Conclusion: Not much to complain about really, great action film that is funny as well.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Jack turns up in London where he discovers that an imposter is pretending to be him and recruiting and ship and crew to go find the Fountain of Youth. The problem is, that the English and the Spanish are racing there too.

The good: Riding on the Pirates of the Caribbean legacy makes for a reasonably good film to watch, on its own.

The bad: It felt like a parody of itself. Being in London, running round the king’s court, it almost felt like some kind of slapstick Carry On film. It runs the fantasy.

Conclusion: A disappointing fourth film in the series. How exactly is it “in the Caribbean” when they spend so much of the film in London?

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Davy Jones comes to collect his debt from Jack Sparrow – the debt being Jack himself. Can Jack find a way to save himself? (Answering that myself would spoil the plot so I’m not going to).

The good: Along similar lines as the first one and so features the kind of light-hearted adventure theme.

The bad: The storyline isn’t as good as the first, it’s just overall a bit lacklustre, not as good in terms of action and adventure as the first.

Conclusion: It grows on you. Originally this was given a 4.8, but having re-watched it, it definitely deserves more.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: The East India Trading Company has control of the Flying Dutchman – it might just be time to call together all the pirate lords and fight back!

The good: It’s what you expect from a Pirates of the Caribbean film. Which is good.

The bad: I can’t make up my mind whether I’m annoyed or not, that nobody either dies in the film.

Conclusion: It’s what it says on the tin – a Pirates of the Caribbean amusing action adventure.

Mean Girls film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Cady arrives from being home schooled in Africa to go to high school for the first time. It’s an interesting experience. She soon founds herself hanging out with the popular kids named “The Plastics” as an insider but ends up becoming one of them.

The good: Lindsay Lohan puts on a decent enough performance, it’s actually slightly more innovative than most films of the genre.

The bad: Still your classic multi-genre piece with drama, comedy and romance, nothing majorly new.

Conclusion: Good one for the kids and teens. Otherwise, don’t bother.
