Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Davy Jones comes to collect his debt from Jack Sparrow – the debt being Jack himself. Can Jack find a way to save himself? (Answering that myself would spoil the plot so I’m not going to).

The good: Along similar lines as the first one and so features the kind of light-hearted adventure theme.

The bad: The storyline isn’t as good as the first, it’s just overall a bit lacklustre, not as good in terms of action and adventure as the first.

Conclusion: It grows on you. Originally this was given a 4.8, but having re-watched it, it definitely deserves more.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: The East India Trading Company has control of the Flying Dutchman – it might just be time to call together all the pirate lords and fight back!

The good: It’s what you expect from a Pirates of the Caribbean film. Which is good.

The bad: I can’t make up my mind whether I’m annoyed or not, that nobody either dies in the film.

Conclusion: It’s what it says on the tin – a Pirates of the Caribbean amusing action adventure.

Mean Girls film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Cady arrives from being home schooled in Africa to go to high school for the first time. It’s an interesting experience. She soon founds herself hanging out with the popular kids named “The Plastics” as an insider but ends up becoming one of them.

The good: Lindsay Lohan puts on a decent enough performance, it’s actually slightly more innovative than most films of the genre.

The bad: Still your classic multi-genre piece with drama, comedy and romance, nothing majorly new.

Conclusion: Good one for the kids and teens. Otherwise, don’t bother.

The Matrix film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Neo is told that he is “the one.” The man that can lead humanity to victory over the machines. The only problem is, Neo thought he was living in the real world in the 1990’s and not simply imprisoned in a computerised version of said world.

The good: It’s brilliant, the plot is complex and a great idea, it’s full of amazing martial arts done by the actual actors and bullet time produces some amazing effects.

The bad: Unless your a geek you won’t completely understand it the first time you watch it.

Conclusion: See this film.

Matrix Revolutions film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: The final show down between humans and machines and indeed between Neo and Agent Smith. Concluding part of the Matrix trilogy.

The good: Awesome fight scenes as always, fantastic battle for Zion, nice ending.

The bad: A bit too battle focused perhaps.

Conclusion: Top class ending to the trilogy.

Matrix Reloaded film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Second in the Matrix trilogy sees the humans fighting against the machines and the first look at the underground city of Zion.

The good: More kick as kung fu, a few interesting twists.

The bad: Kind of feels like an in the middle movie that is just there because it needs to fill the middle of the trilogy.

Conclusion: Given it could never live up to the reputation of the first one it was a very good attempt.

Master and Commander film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Follows the adventures of Captain Jack Aubrey and his ship during the Napoleonic Wars.

The good: Great use of Russell Crowe – no trying to get him to have a second dimension or anything. Also good stuff about evolution for the science nerds.

The bad: It’s all action, there’s no attempt to any kind of romantic subplot to keep the girlfriend happy.

Conclusion: Great action movie, well worth watching for that. Nothing beyond that, though.

The Longest Yard film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: When a professional footballer is jailed having a history of points shaving he is forced to train a prison football team to play the guards. Soon it turns from a moral builder for the guards into a full blown competition though.

The good: Adam Sandler. Everybody loves Adam Sandler.

The bad: Fairly predictable ending. A little brutal in places.

Conclusion: An absolute must for all Adam Sandler films and worth a watch for any fans of comedies.

Logan’s Run film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: They live in a perfect society where they want for nothing but are “renewed” on their 30th birthday. It’s all good until it’s Logan’s turn for renewal when he suddenly finds himself in the position as the runner.

The good: Classic sci-fi, great storyline. Plus someone gets shot in the ass.

The bad: It’s like 40 years old. It ages well though it’s obviously not amazing special effects.

Conclusion: Modern film fans won’t like it. Anyone who likes sci-fi or classics will though.

Labyrinth film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: The goblin king kidnaps Sarah’s little brother and she has 13 hours to make it through the Labyrinth to the goblin king’s castle in order to save him.

The good: David Bowie! How can you go wrong when the goblin king is also providing 80’s rock music? It’s just generally a fun adventure?

The bad: It’s like twenty years old now and kids are used to all the cool special effects despite how good the puppets are.

Conclusion: It’s a fun adventure to show your kids.
