Hail to the chef

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009 | Life, Thoughts

I have to say I’m really getting into this cooking thing. I’ve just made myself another Pot Noodle and the other day I purchased a frozen pizza and put it in the oven for a period of time before removing and and then consuming it. I’m still not completely sold that it is a better alternative to microwave meals but it’s certainly a novelty.

North Yorkshire Humanist BBQ

Sunday, July 19th, 2009 | Events, Humanism, Life, Thoughts

On Saturday night I attended the annual BBQ of the North Yorkshire Humanist Society (so don’t get confused – it wasn’t a BBQ where we cooked North Yorkshire Humanists 😉 ).

The BBQ itself was good although I feel I was mis-sold when told it was in York as it was in a village just outside named Haxby – not a problem when you’re coming from York but on the far side when driving up from Leeds.

It was interesting to see the demographics in North Yorkshire, the age range is much better than West Yorkshire although this could have been disorted by the fact it was a bit more of a social event than a regular meeting.

They seem an active enough society though, they hold 11 meetings a year (just missing out August) which is more frequent than a lot of societies which take extensive summer breaks and they seem to have quite a bit of committee rotation going on.

Amateurs

Perhaps I don’t have much room to talk, but you should really proof anything you publish as mistakes such as this don’t exactly do much for your advertisements.

My new favourite photo

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009 | Photos, Thoughts

Took this from the top of a hill near Pen-y-ghent this weekend, absolutely love it, it’s going to be one of my new website headers when I do the next batch. Cheers to Lil for taking the photo.

Strange experiences

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009 | Reviews, Thoughts

Myself and Zoltan had an appointment at HSBC today to get our community bank account up and running. It was rapidly turning into the AHS dragging on and on with them never getting in touch with me except for a torrent of letters saying they were trying to get in touch with me but couldn’t (I got them to check my contact details – they have them correct).

Anyway we went down to the branch today, Zoltan was late of course, and got it sorted there with amazing ease – we were in and out in 10-15 minutes and the account is now open!

As such I thought I would mention a positive experience I have had with dealing with a bank, especially given they are becoming even more rare these days (as if that were possible 😉 ).

Rochdale

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 | Friends, Life, Thoughts

Having met everyone at The Library for our usual Sunday lunch fun – including a suprise guest appearance by Rob and Jewish Dan, I headed off with George to move some of his stuff back to Rochdale.

It’s an, interesting place, shall we say. Though it does have a very nice business park on the outskirts which if a second company was ever to take up some of the many arces of land available there would really brighten the place up.

Consider yourself warned

Sunday, June 28th, 2009 | Thoughts

I went round Oakwood drive-thru on the way home to grab some food last night and noticed this notice in the window.

McNotice

If you can’t read the notice it says…

For the Safety & Security of both our customers and staff this restaurant is remotely monitored with a direct contact to the Police.

This means that they have a security office somewhere monitoring the cameras to make sure there isn’t someone up to no good. My question is though, what is a “direct contact to the Police”? I mean, that implies to me they can contact the police directly.

But, I can do that. The Police gave me their phone number too. I would imagine most people have it actually, it’s quite easy to remember, it’s only three digits.

Deer hunting

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 | Friends, Life, Thoughts

On Monday myself and Michelle headed out to the Deer Park to celebrate a number of different things including someone having received her teaching application (this is a landmark achievement for the Royal Mail).

It occured to me though that are days at the Deer Park maybe be looking limited. If you include the fact that I am spending the weekend after next in Warwick for the AHS national conference I only have 9 days left in Roundhay!

I will certainly miss it, there aren’t any overly nice pubs on my door step next year though there are plenty of cheap ones such as the Library and town just a few minutes walk away. In any case though I think a few trips out to the Deer Park at some point may be in order.

Parklife

Thursday, June 4th, 2009 | Life, Thoughts

As part of an effort to actually make it to the park more now that the weather has improved, I actually made it down on Sunday and went for a short walk around the lake.

Problem is with it being so hot and a weekend lots of other people had done the same thing – just another reason why we need border control checkpoints to assess people’s income before letting them in to Roundhay 😉 .
