Inside the mind of Derren Brown

Monday, September 21st, 2009 | Events, Humanism

Saturday saw the September meetup of Leeds Skeptics in the Pub which this month saw a talk delivered by yours truely on Derren Brown’s recent “How to win the lottery.” It was a fairly short talk to be honest, “basically, the guy is just psychic” pretty much concluded everything I had to say in one sentence.

From here on we explored the various tricks and trimmings presented to us by Derren who may not actually be able to predict the lottery but certainly puts on a good show.

09/09/09 Party

Thursday, September 10th, 2009 | Events, Friends, Life

By Wednesday evening Lil had been up for over 24 hours having worked nights on Tuesdays and then fueled herself up on Relentless. Or crack, it’s hard to tell the difference when someone the size of Lil drinks an entire can of Relentless. As we haven’t seen the can, or the crack, whichever one it actually was, I guess we’ll never know.

So the obvious thing to do in this situation was to head over to Nicola’s 09/09/09 party celebrating the fact it was the 9th of September 2009 – an idea she had only made up the night before while drunk at the A-Soc social and had just invited “very special friends” to despite the fact that there were over 70 people on the Facebook guest list.

Till the steak runs dry

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009 | Events, Humanism, Life

Last night saw the usual weekly A-Soc summer social at the Cuthbert Brodrick for much steak and drinking. As ever a good time was bad by all, except Rich, who we managed to drive crazy with talk about the logo. On the plus side however, Kate and Steven are now “official” according to Rich.

Interestingly Sophie couldn’t make it and Paul cancelled on us at the last minute leading us to the conclusion that Paul is actually in control of, and indeed has been in control of, the society all along through his puppets, myself, Norm and now Sophie. We always suspected, but never guessed…

That Friday feeling

Sunday, September 6th, 2009 | Events, Friends, Humanism, Life

Having presumed I had made it through the weekly bout of A-Soc events I soon found myself up two hours early on Friday morning to attend a design meeting because there was opposition to continuing the discussions in the main committee meeting the night before.

So myself, Zoltan and Michael met up in Tasty for a breakfast meeting at which I thought was rather productive though it later turned out this was not a view held by all parties.

This resulted in A-Soc work dragging on long into the night as we are still trying to work out an effective logo we can use for the society this year. I also spent a large amount of timing implementing new features on the website and checking over everything, updating copy, etc. Let it never be said the society doesn’t keep you busy!

Brighter than usual

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009 | Events, Life

Headed down for the monthly meetup of the York Brights on Wednesday which saw a record turnout for the group! That said the pub wasn’t exactly up to scratch – they had run out of lemonade and pint glasses!

In any case the group provided it’s usual good conversation and entertainment as well as a chance to flash my new title and charity. Good times.

The long goodbye

Monday, August 17th, 2009 | Events, Friends, Life

Saturday night was Michelle’s leaving do before she heads off to Lancaster, on purpose, to do a PGCE to convert her useful highly paid high potential career progression computing degree into a teaching one.

Having started the night at Little Tokyo we then headed to Cuthbert Brodrick, Fab Cafe and finally Wendy House. Wendy was pretty good as turnout was low but Stylus was closed which resulted in there being plenty of people in Mine but there still being tickets left, the perfect combination.

In any case, I hope we managed a reasonable send-off. It was 4am by the time we made to bed which is respectable if not quite all night.

Evolution and homosexuality

Sunday, August 16th, 2009 | Events, Humanism

Saturday saw Skeptics in the Pub roll round again with this month’s talk being delivered by Rich on evolution and homosexuality – the talk which he gave on the Thursday of Rationalist Week 2009. As always the talk was excellent and turn out was quite reasonable given it was summer. Good times.

Tom’s birthday

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009 | Events, Friends, Life

On Monday we headed out to celebrate Tom’s birthday. I say we, it was mainly Rosie really with nobody else arriving until over two hours after it had started (at least some of us had already said we couldn’t make it until that time 😉 ). We began at Cuthbert Brodrick but soon enough Sophie got us kicked out for being under age so we ended up at Stick Or Twist before heading to Fab.

BBQ

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009 | Events, Life

Headed over to my parents on Monday for a big family BBQ as we had relatives over from Canada. Food was good which is the most important thing plus it was a chance to brag about how how awesome my life is. Fun times 😀 .

Sunday sessions

Sunday, August 9th, 2009 | Events, Life

Sunday lunch made a much welcome return today though continuing Michelle’s hate campaign against Wetherspoon’s we had to go down to the Scarborough Hotel which provided us with some very nice meals indeed though at the kind of price you have to be prepared to pay at town.

After a short break round the Armouries we then headed to Oracle which was quite nice though it was £2.80 for a pint of orange juice and on top of that the hot girl behind the bar then tried to short change me by a £1! A damning indictment of our education system (I hope).
