Master and Commander film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Follows the adventures of Captain Jack Aubrey and his ship during the Napoleonic Wars.

The good: Great use of Russell Crowe – no trying to get him to have a second dimension or anything. Also good stuff about evolution for the science nerds.

The bad: It’s all action, there’s no attempt to any kind of romantic subplot to keep the girlfriend happy.

Conclusion: Great action movie, well worth watching for that. Nothing beyond that, though.

The Longest Yard film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: When a professional footballer is jailed having a history of points shaving he is forced to train a prison football team to play the guards. Soon it turns from a moral builder for the guards into a full blown competition though.

The good: Adam Sandler. Everybody loves Adam Sandler.

The bad: Fairly predictable ending. A little brutal in places.

Conclusion: An absolute must for all Adam Sandler films and worth a watch for any fans of comedies.

Logan’s Run film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: They live in a perfect society where they want for nothing but are “renewed” on their 30th birthday. It’s all good until it’s Logan’s turn for renewal when he suddenly finds himself in the position as the runner.

The good: Classic sci-fi, great storyline. Plus someone gets shot in the ass.

The bad: It’s like 40 years old. It ages well though it’s obviously not amazing special effects.

Conclusion: Modern film fans won’t like it. Anyone who likes sci-fi or classics will though.

Labyrinth film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: The goblin king kidnaps Sarah’s little brother and she has 13 hours to make it through the Labyrinth to the goblin king’s castle in order to save him.

The good: David Bowie! How can you go wrong when the goblin king is also providing 80’s rock music? It’s just generally a fun adventure?

The bad: It’s like twenty years old now and kids are used to all the cool special effects despite how good the puppets are.

Conclusion: It’s a fun adventure to show your kids.

Kingdom of Heaven film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Balian (Orlando Bloom) travels to Jerusalem during the Crusades and ends up having to defend it against the Muslim army that comes against the city.

The good: Entertaining enough to sit through. The armies look really cool.

The bad: It was sold as like a massive siege battle whereas that is only like the last twenty minutes. There is a lot more drama than the trailers gave the impresion of.

Conclusion: Pretty good, I would probably watch it again. Doubt I will be buying the DVD though.

Juno film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: High school student Juno finds herself pregnant and on deciding not to go through with an adoption sets about searching for adoptive parents she approves of.

The good: Good ending, the right mix between a little bit different and yet not annoying unconventional.

The bad: It’s a bit slow moving at times.

Conclusion: Good film but probably doesn’t have a wide public appeal. Watch it if you consider yourself “a fan of cinema.”

Johnny English film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: When all the English secret agents are killed it’s down to Johnny English to step up the plate and save the country again.

The good: It’s very funny.

The bad: While it’s English it’s not really British, it’s still Hollywood. Though that’s far from a total loss.

Conclusion: Funny film, worth a watch.

High School Musical film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

Sucks. Ok, I know it is a kids movie but really, it’s awful. The plot is absolutely generic, it’s captain of the basketball team and head of the science club (who happens to be absolutely stunning for some reason because that’s how it works in real life, oh and they can both sing really well too, what are they like kings among men?) decide to do a musical because they are actually so much deeper than their sterotypes would suggest.

Even if you could accept that (as lots of movies do follow that type of plot) it’s pulled off in such a bad generic way that it makes a mockary out of an already overused story. Suddenly people become friends at the end – not “ok I’ll put up with you and sulk a bit” but “hey I love you guys and always have” even though they were just trying to screw them over five minutes ago.

The acting is good enough but the script nor production really gives them much of a chance to show it. Singing is obviously dubbed, the girl has a beautiful deep voice but is hardly moving her mouth as she walks around. What’s that about?

So yeah, if your small kid has never seen a movie before then they will probably enjoy it. But anyone with any kind of sense or knowledge of the real world will see right through it. Stay away.

Happy Gilmore film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Happy’s one dream is to play hockey. There is only one problem – he’s not any good at it. The only thing he has is a mighty powerful shot which may come in handy in say, golf. So raise the money to by his grandmother’s house back he enters the pro tour.

The good: Adam Sandler gives an excellent performance, it’s a general all-rounder with comedy, romance, etc, etc.

The bad: It has it’s very funny moments and it’s not so funny comments which tend to drag a bit.

Conclusion: It’s a good solid Adam Sandler comedy. But nothing more.

The Hangover film review

Saturday, February 17th, 2007 | Reviews

The plot: Four guys to go Las Vegas for a bachelor party. The next day, three of them wake up, they don’t remember anything, the groom has disappeared and the hotel room is wrecked. They go on a search to find their missing friend and gradually uncover what happened the night before.

The good: Has some mildly amusing parts. Sound track uses a song by The Donnas.

The bad: Not funny enough. As a pure comedy, with no attempt at a good story or plot line, it should be very funny. But it isn’t. I found myself chuckling quite a bit, but that was about it. No laugh out loud moments though the entire film.

Conclusion: Not very good. Mildly amusing, but given the plot is a story-less void that just sets up one joke after another you would expect the jokes to be good. But they’re not.
