AudioSenate.net development

Friday, February 17th, 2006 | Life

I’ve been putting some work in on AudioSenate.net. The old system wasn’t working well enough so there is going to be a new one which automatically indexes the albums from each artist and will contain more information, not just reviews.

WordPress 2 performance issues

Friday, February 17th, 2006 | Life

I’m getting some massive performance issues with any posts I insert a photo into on WordPress 2. It’s pretty bad, whatever I post actually, as I’ve mentioned before. I’m annoyed dammit.

Don’t control my windows

Friday, February 17th, 2006 | Life

Ok, webmaster tip. Don’t control my windows! If I want a new window, I will open one. I don’t need the link to open one for me when I am going from the homepage to the gallery page. And if it’s an external link that opens in a new window I will close the new window, open the link in a new tab and close the existing one. So it’s not doing you any good.

Also, JavaScript links. Don’t use them! It’s not big and it’s not clever. Like the MySpace keywords that need JavaScript to open so if I want to hold Ctrl down and open a load of them in new tabs in Firefox, none of them work so the only thing I can do is open them in the current window. That’s probably worse than opening new windows. Use standard links and add JavaScript to the event tags such as onClick where they belong.

Yahoo are pretty nice guys

Thursday, February 16th, 2006 | Life

Recently I was in a conversation where someone said that Google was seen as the non-evil alternative to Yahoo. I have never considered this the case. I have always thought (and thought many others shared the same view) that Yahoo is the non-evil alternative to MSN.

But that’s not what this post is about. It’s about the Yahoo UI Library. Yahoo have been doing a bit here and there for developers already working on the media RSS standard dealie.

Now they have this UI thing which is a library of JavaScript components that you can download and use including some stuff for AJAX, drag and drop elements, it all sounds pretty cool. I recommend you check it out.

They also have a Design Pattern Library thing which shows some of the uses and such.

Mp3 player problems

Thursday, February 16th, 2006 | Life

Well my Mp3 player has given up the back button. That means I can’t go to the previous track but more importantly it means I can’t navigate around so I can’t (at least easily) get back to the root album to pick the folder / album I want to play. Send back time I think. I hope it’s still under warrenty.

Panic at The Cockpit

Thursday, February 16th, 2006 | Life

Wow, didn’t see this coming. I was looking forward to a nice easy night watching Bratcamp. Need to find the repeat for that now. I was at film making society this afternoon and got back at about 7:30 or something to get a text from Michelle at 9 inviting me to The Cockpit as her flatmates were going as it’s a birthday type thing.

I managed to drag Sarann out too (who dragged flatmates Liz and John out as well :p). We ended up staying until the end at 2 am and almost missed the bus. Not that managing to get it is going to allow me to get enough sleep as I have to be in at 9 am this morning :p.

So thinking about it, blogging isn’t the greatest plan either. But then blogging has to come before sleep. Which I should probably engage in now.

I hate computers so much

Wednesday, February 15th, 2006 | Life

I really hate computers. My router keeps dieing on my ass and Firefox is just being aweful, it takes ages to load or just stops working or won’t let me select between tags. I dunno whether it’s my computer or just buggy. Or both.

Accidential text messages

There are 17 blank text messages in a row in the sent items on my phone. Really not good.

Spell checking with Google

Wednesday, February 15th, 2006 | Life

I open use Google to spell check my blogs. If there is a particular word I am not totally sure the spelling of I will copy it and paste it into the quick search function of Firefox in a new tab.

It’s wierd the websites you come up with in the listings though as they are so random. I came up with a site named Reduce Your Rubbish which is a site run by the New Zealand government’s Ministry for Environment about reducing the amount of rubbish you produce to help the environment.

Those wacky Christians

Wednesday, February 15th, 2006 | Life

Michelle is running out of food so she went to a free lunch and talk dealie set up by the Christian Union and today’s topic was about Jesus rising from the dead (seriously, like there are 40-50 year old guys who actually believe it happened. I know that statment is obviously but you really need to take a step back and think about it).

So yeah, I decided to go along. I’m always open to different beliefs if only to rubbish them. I then got chatting and started networking for Encoria so I think it was time well spent.
