Zoltan and the steak

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009 | Friends, Humanism, Life

A-Soc social rolled around on Tuesday though despite it being steak night the Cuthbert Brodrick had, somehow, managed to run out of rump and sirloin steak! Luckily we were all ordering mixed grills so it worked out alright in the end.

What followed was a night of long debate and drinking – Rich getting through two bottles of wine by himself! Probably suggested to him by Kate who then proceeded to try and molest him.

Drunken Sundays

Monday, August 17th, 2009 | Friends, Life

We seem to be rapidly developing some kind of pub sandwich system for Sundays at the moment where we go to the pub, then go do something, then go back to pub.

We kicked Sunday off at the Scarborough Hotel for some lunch which was most enjoyable as their food always is. We did however have to suffer a random pricing structure though in which a pint of coke was charged at either £0.80, £1.20, £1.50 or £2.40 depending on when you went up. Crazy.

Once we had finished up here we headed over to the Leeds Museum before going for more drinks at the Cuthbert Brodrick where we eventually had dinner as well. We also found the almost resident Alex in there as well – she assured us she does leave sometimes but personally I’m not convinced.

Leeds Museum

We finally made it to the Leeds Museum on Sunday and while we only had an hour or so to get round it, it was quite interesting none the less. It was a little more grand than I had expected with a large arena style room in the centre and plenty of winding staircases with different exhibits on the different floors.

We made it round most of it in the time we were in there but most of it in a rush so we could have easily spent a few more hours in there. All in all, worth a visit though nothing spectacular.

The long goodbye

Monday, August 17th, 2009 | Events, Friends, Life

Saturday night was Michelle’s leaving do before she heads off to Lancaster, on purpose, to do a PGCE to convert her useful highly paid high potential career progression computing degree into a teaching one.

Having started the night at Little Tokyo we then headed to Cuthbert Brodrick, Fab Cafe and finally Wendy House. Wendy was pretty good as turnout was low but Stylus was closed which resulted in there being plenty of people in Mine but there still being tickets left, the perfect combination.

In any case, I hope we managed a reasonable send-off. It was 4am by the time we made to bed which is respectable if not quite all night.

Will & Grace

Sunday, August 16th, 2009 | Friends, Photos, Thoughts

As I’ve long maintained, Kate and Rich would make a great couple, they would be just like Will & Grace out of the self-title show. If any further proof were needed just like at what a cute couple they look like when taking faux-wedding photos.

Little Tokyo

Sunday, August 16th, 2009 | Life, Reviews

Had my first experience at Little Tokyo on Saturday.

To be honest, it was very disappointing. The pricing wasn’t too bad for the quality of restaurant I guess but not being a fan of Japanese food I didn’t really enjoy it too much. Also they don’t have forks which was rather irritating, I did ask and got a pair of child’s chop sticks which didn’t really help the situation as it’s not that I can’t use chop sticks (not that I can, it was a mission) it’s that I wanted a fork – I used the actual chop sticks anyway.

On the plus side though it was reasonably amusing to watch some of the other patrons try and traverse the walkways between the tables (which are inset into the floor) in high heels plus they had somehow got the idea it was someone’s birthday and so we ended up getting Dan a birthday sundae complete with sparkler.

Evolution and homosexuality

Sunday, August 16th, 2009 | Events, Humanism

Saturday saw Skeptics in the Pub roll round again with this month’s talk being delivered by Rich on evolution and homosexuality – the talk which he gave on the Thursday of Rationalist Week 2009. As always the talk was excellent and turn out was quite reasonable given it was summer. Good times.

Wine

Sunday, August 16th, 2009 | Life, Photos, Thoughts

It’s an expensive business this young professional lifestyle.

Picked up a few bottles of wine at Tesco which was an interesting experience, trying to pretend I wasn’t just guesing. As I said on Twitter though I think a sensible policy is to avoid any wine which insists it must be enjoyed with a meal rather than on it’s own.

That is all fair enough but now I just have them sitting around on my side so now I need to buy a wine rack which is even more expense. Might try and hold out until my birthday.

Final touches

Sunday, August 16th, 2009 | Life

Things are finally getting sorted in my apartment.

Had the parents over on Wednesday to give their seal of approval. They seem to be happy enough though didn’t as we were all hoping bring a three piece suite as a house warming gift. Still, probably too much to hope for in terms of what could have been produced from a carrier bag.

Also the contractors have finally been out to the house so I finally have keys to my balcony so if I decide to take up smoking I’m sorted. It should also be great for house parties and hopefully I can get some kind of table and chairs sorted for out there for the odd spots of sunshine we will hopefully experience this year.

Steak night

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009 | Humanism, Life

Tuesday night saw the second A-Soc summer social since the move to Cuthbert Brodrick. It was a fine move indeed with it being steak night! So having enjoyed a variety of steaks (including a mixed grill for myself) we settled in with some drinks and chatted the night away like old times. Apparently some people were intoxicated but I can’t say I noticed.
