Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny film review

The plot: JB goes to Hollywood to make it as a famous rock star. When he gets there he meets a man named Kyle Gass who agrees to teach him the way of rock and roll. They team up in order to steal the pick of destiny which transforms average musicians into rock gods.

The good: Tenacious D music, Jack Black rules, it’s funny.

The bad: Maybe a little low-brow, could have done with a few jokes that were a bit cleverer.

Conclusion: Fun movie, go see it.

Ted film review

The plot: John Bennett is your average guy – he works at a car rental company, has a small apartment and enjoys getting stoned with his real life teddy bear that magically came to life after he wished for it to when he was a child. Unfortunately, his bromance with Ted is starting to get in the way of his relationship with girlfriend Lori.

The good: Has some funny moments, plus Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis are always welcome additions. Good ending. Features Sam Jones, the star of Flash Gordon.

The bad: Doesn’t have as many funny moments as you would like. Could have been more Mila Kunis.

Conclusion: It was always going to be a big challenge when Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane announced he was making a movie, because we were all expecting great things. As it is, we got something reasonably funny, but I was hoping for better.

Team America: World Police film review

The plot: South Korean president Kim Jong Il plots to kill all of the world leaders in a huge terrorist attack only one group can stop them – Team America: World Police. From Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the guys behind South Park.

The good: Very funny, has some good social commentary.

The bad: Racist, low-brow humour, contains the over-obvious messages South Park does, generally just offensive.

Conclusion: If you are easily offended then stay well away from this. If you think South Park is funny then watch it. If your somewhere in the middle, it’s misable but don’t go out of your way to avoid it.

The Social Network film review

The plot: Tells the story of Mark Zuckerberg and how he founded Facebook.

The good: The geeks will love it, it’s a fascinating insight into the story of Facebook, even if it may not be in any way accurate.

The bad: Despite its reviewer’s claims of wide appeal, I’m not so sure how true that will hold.

Conclusion: It’s a film done well if you have interest in the subject, otherwise give it a miss.

Silent Hill film review

The plot: Rose takes her crazy daughter to a town named Silent Hill hoping it will cure her. However when she loses her in the town and goes in search of her things get weird.

The good: I love Silent Hill because it was a franchise designed to by scary. The movie adaption is quite good at this.

The bad: Could have been a bit scarier. It was very creepy but things like mysterious noises, dark rooms you can’t see into were missing a little. The movie was more about the story.

Conclusion: I loved it but if you’re not a fan of the game you probably won’t like it as much. That doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy it, it’s still a really good horror movie and a cool idea.

The Shawshank Redemption film review

The plot: A tale of two men who become good friends in prison and eventually find redemption.

The good: Very moving, great storytelling, Morgan Freeman.

The bad: Not much to say here really, it’s a drama and over two hours long to it’s a substantial movie but I never got bored when watching it.

Conclusion: Fantastic movie.

Shaun of the Dead film review

The plot: Zombie’s begin to take over the streets and it’s down to Shaun to lead his friends to safety. Set in a romantic backdrop, Shaun of the Dead is the original Rom-Zom-Com.

The good: It’s funny, it really is. It has some great moments. That’s it, it’s just very funny.

The bad: Although it calls itself a “rom-zom-com” it’s obviously all about the comedy with very little horror or romance. The humour might be a little British-y.

Conclusion: As I’ve already said, it’s funny. Worth a watch.

Road Trip film review

The plot: When Josh accidentally mails a tape of him with another girl to his long distance girlfriend, four friends set out on a road trip to get it back before she sees it.

The good: Very, very funny.

The bad: Typical teen humour, going even further than American Pie to the point some people may just walk out in disgust.

Conclusion: If you liked American Pie you absolutely have to see this movie. If you thought American Pie was crude and unfunny you will want these 90 minutes of your life back.

Resident Evil: Extinction film review

The plot: The T Virus has escaped and now it’s the end of the world – zombies have taken over the planet, the whole world has been turned into desert and the only survivors are either people on the run, or Umbrella executives sat in their underground labs.

The good: It’s never a bad thing to see Milla Jovovich’s face.

The bad: All you really get to see is Milla Jovovich’s face. Also not a great deal happens.

Conclusion: If you like the franchise, it is an OK sequel, otherwise it’s a pretty poor effort. Literally, nothing happens.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse film review

The plot: A small group of survivors led by Alice from the first movie attempt to escape the confines of Racoon City before the Umbrella Corporation clears up it’s mess.

The good: Lots of zombies, some kick ass action, lictors.

The bad: A bit wider than the original and so a little less focused on the surival horror than the first. Terrible, terrible ending.

Conclusion: It’s a great movie but what happens at the ending really drags it down. Luckily it’s not the very end which doesn’t finish too badly so you won’t feel like you wasted your time, it’s just it’s not as good as it could have been.
