If you wait a while though it will at least tell you it thinks it’s crashed…
Maybe I can fix it by going to the options panel…

Seems like google gears is the issue. I don’t have this installed in FF and have no issues, even on sites that claim to need (albeit optionally) google gears.
Is there some way of turning google gears off in the browser (although I fear that, being a google browser, there won’t be)
